Thesis Statement:
Cosmology is a subfield of astronomy that deals with the origin and evolution of
the universe, and is the scientific study of the large scale properties and structure of the
universe as a whole.
Outline
1. Introduction
1.1 History - first used in English in 1656 in Thomas Blount`s “Glossophoria” and
in 1731 in Latin by German philosopher Christian Wolf, in “Cosmologia
Generalis”.
1.2 Definition - Studies theories of the origin of the universe, one popular
example of this is the Big Bang theory.
1.3 Thesis Statement - Cosmology, a subfield of astronomy, deals with the origin
and evolution of the universe and also studies the large scale properties of
the universe as a whole
2. Sub-fields of Astronomy
2.1 Planetary Astronomy – Study of planets, comets, and meteors
2.2 Solar Astronomy – Study of the sun and its changes
2.3 Stellar Astronomy – Study of stars from its creation until its death
2.4 Galactic Astronomy – Study of the motion and evolution of the Milky Way
galaxy
2.5 Extragalactic Astronomy – Study of galaxies outside the Milky Way Galaxy
2.6 Cosmology – Focuses on the study of the creation/origin of the universe
3. Theories on the origin of the universe
3.1 Big Bang Theory – The universe originated from a very small and
concentrated point called a singularity
3.2 Creationism – The universe was created by an all-powerful being or god
3.3 String Theory – The universe is one of many universes that already exists
called a multiverse
4. Large Scale Properties/Structure of the Universe
4.1 Voids and Filaments
4.2 Superclusters
4.3 Clusters
4.4 Galaxy Groups
4.5 Galaxies
5. Conclusion
5.1 Summary – Cosmology is different from the other subfields for it tries to
answer the questions “When did the universe exist? How was it created?”.
There are many theories that tried to explain this, a known example would be
the Big Bang theory. The different subfields sub-fields in astronomy are
planetary, solar, stellar, galactic, and extragalactic astronomy as well as
cosmology. There 3 popular theories on the origin the universe, which are Big
Bang theory, Creationism, and String Theory. Lastly, the large scale
properties/structure of the universe include voids and filaments which are
superclusters, clusters, galaxy groups and galaxies.
5.2 Reiteration of the Thesis Statement
Cosmology, a subfield of astronomy, deals with the origin/evolution of the
universe and also studies the large scale properties of the universe as a
whole.
