Assignment-1

SUBJECT: - OPEN CHANNEL HYDRAULICS (CS7129)

1. What are classification of flow in channels?

2. Find the velocity of flow and rate of flow of water through a rectangular channel of 6m

wide and 3 m deep, when it is running full. The channel is having bed slope as 1in 2000.

Take chezy’s constant=5.

3. What do you mean by most economical section of channels? Write all the formula which

involve for most economical rectangular channel.

4. Derive an expression for kinetic energy correction factor (α). ẞ

5. The width of a horizontal rectangular channel is reduced from 3.5m to 2.5m and the floor

is raised by 0.25m elevation at a given section. At the upstream section, the depth of flow

is 2.0m and the kinetic energy correction factor (α) is 1.15. if the drop in the water surface

elevation at the contraction is 0.20m, calculate the discharge if (a) the energy loss is

neglected, and (b) the energy loss is one-tenth of the upstream velocity head . (the kinetic

energy correction factor at the contracted section may be assumed to be unity).

6. Define the following terms.

(a) Specific energy (b) critical depth (c) critical velocity (d) alternate depth

7. A rectangular channel of width 4m is having a bed slope of 1 in 1500. Find the maximum

discharge through the channel. Take value of C=50.

8. Explain about the pressure distribution in open channel flow.

9. Derive an expression for momentum correction factor (ẞ).

(the kinetic

energy correction factor at the contracted section may be assumed to be unity)

11. Derive an expression for energy equation.

12. The velocity distribution in a rectangular channel of width B and depth of flow Y was

approximated as V=k√𝑦 in which k=constant. Calculate the average velocity for the c/s

and correction coefficient (α) and (ẞ).

13. Explain about the velocity distribution in open channel flow.

14. Derive an expression for momentum correction factor (ẞ).

15. Derive an expression for momentum equation.
