Interview Script

The document is an interview script that introduces chemical engineering. It begins by having the hosts discuss how chemical engineering plays a role in many industries and develops processes to create useful products. The script then provides sample interview questions that define chemical engineering, discuss its applications and contributions across many fields, and common career paths for chemical engineers. It aims to both gauge interviewees' existing knowledge of the field while also sharing information about chemical engineering.

INTERVIEW SCRIPT

INTRODUCTION

(Video clips of things na may ChE applications)

(Focus on ChE word on blackboard)

Celine: Ang Chemical Engineering ay isang important engineering discipline that plays a
significant role in almost every sector in the industry in our society.

Benjie: Almost everything around us involves the application of Chemical Engineering

Prezel: Pero hindi lahat ay aware sa role or contribution ng Chemical Engineering

ALL: So we are here today to interview some people to check if they have any knowledge about
Chemical Engineering and what Chemical Engineers do and to also share knowledge
about this discipline.

INTERVIEW

1. Do you know what is Chemical Engineering?

- (Wait for interviewee to reply)
- (Definition)
Basically, chemical engineering uses the principles of chemistry, physics,
mathematics and even economics to produce or change raw materials into useful
products such as clothes, food and drink, and energy.
- Chemical engineers focus on processes and products – they develop and design
processes to create products; either focusing on improving existing processes or
creating new ones.
- (History)
relatively young profession, less than 100 years old.
Chemical engineering as a discipline that was developed out of those practicing
"industrial chemistry" in the late 19th century.
- George Davis is considered the father of chemical engineering.
He found several similarities in the processes occurring in various units of different
plants. He made a comprehensive study of the different processes in these plants and
highlighted the fundamental principles on which these processes were based.
- The observation of the fundamental similarity in the different processes in the
various plants led to the introduction of the concept of unit operations. For
example, the principles are the same whether one is concerned about separating
alcohol from water in a fermenter, or separating gasoline from diesel in a refinery, as
long as the basis of separation is generation of a vapor of a different composition
from the liquid. Therefore, such separation processes can be studied together as a unit
operation, in this case called distillation.

2. Do you know if may contribution/application ang ChE sa inyo life?

- (Give example of everyday life applications of ChE)
- Contributions of ChE
Food and Fisheries
Environment
Pharmaceutical Industry
Electronics Industry
Energy
Material Science
(if possible cite examples)
- Major fields in ChE
Environmental Engineering
Biochemical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering
Electrochemical Engineering
Nanotechnology
Process System Engineering
Nuclear Engineering
- (Medyo in depth na explanation for a specific contribution/major field)
Celine – Food/Biochemical Eng’g
Benjie – Petroleum/Biomedical Eng’g
Prezel – Environment/Nanotech

QUESTIONS

1. How much is the salary of a Chemical Engineer?

- The average pay for a Chemical Engineer is PHP 263,651 per year
- PHP 177,271 - PHP 609,668 per year
- Chemical Engineers earn an average yearly salary of $100,042. Salaries typically start
from $56,595 and go up to $152,038.
2. What is the difference of ChE from Chemistry?
- The big difference between chemistry and chemical engineering has to do with
originality and scale. Chemists are more likely to develop novel materials and
processes, while chemical engineers are more likely to take these materials and
processes and upscale them to make them larger or more efficient.
3. What is the difference of ChE from other engineering disciplines?
- Chemical engineering offers its professionals a broader range of knowledge compared
to other engineering disciplines because this profession is not only limited to the
applications of chemistry to engineering for they also apply other principles such as
physics, biology and mathematics which makes them versatile.
4. What are the job opportunities of a Chemical Engineer?
- Chemical engineers often called as “universal engineers” because of their broad range
of knowledge. So they have several career opportunities in different industries
- Analytical chemist., Energy manager., Environmental engineer., Manufacturing
engineer., Materials engineer., Mining engineer., Production manager., Quality
manager.
5. Where can chemical engineers work?
- Chemical engineers work in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and
construction, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, food processing, specialty chemicals,
microelectronics, electronic and advanced materials, polymers, business services,
biotechnology, and environmental health and safety industries
6. What schools offer chemical engineering degrees?
- UPV, CPU, San Agustin
7. What are the subjects you need to take when you study chemical engineering?
- Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Thermodynamics
8. Why did you choose chemical engineering?
9. Can you get a job immediately after finishing a BS ChE degree?
10. Is Chemical Engineering a difficult degree?

products such as clothes, food and drink, and energy.
- Chemical engineers focus on processes and products – they develop and design
processes to create products; either focusing on improving existing processes or
creating new ones.
- Example:
(show pic of soap)
Soap is composed of a combination of animal fat and a plant oil. It is produced
through a chemical process known as saponification or the soap-making process. In
saponification, the animal fat, which is chemically neutral, splits into fatty acids,
which react with alkali carbonates to form soap, leaving glycerin as a byproduct.
Chemical engineers take advantage of what takes place in this chemical process by
applying chemical engineering techniques to mass produce this product in a safe,
environmental-friendly, and economic way.
- (History)
Relatively young profession, less than 100 years old.
Chemical engineering as a discipline that was developed out of those practicing
"industrial chemistry" in the late 19th century.
- Example
At that time, consumer products such as soap were produced using batch process.
(Show pic of kettle process)
The kettle method of making soap is still used today by small soap
manufacturing companies. This process takes from 4-11 days to complete, and the
quality of each batch is inconsistent due to the variety of oils used. Around 1940,
engineers and scientists developed a more efficient manufacturing process, called
the continuous process. (show pic of continuous process)
Exactly as the name states, in the continuous process soap is produced
continuously, rather than one batch at a time. Technicians have more control of
the production in the continuous process, and the steps are much quicker than in
the kettle method—it takes only about six hours to complete a batch of soap.
