5. METHODOLOGY
1.1 Echo Sounder
The echo sounder which is used for this project is Echosounder Singlebeam with dual frequencies
transducer, that was used to record water depths throughout the survey (see Figure 3). The recording
parameters used in the survey were both high frequency (~210 kHz) and low frequency (~30 kHz).
The Echo sounders have theoretical centimetre accuracies in ideal conditions. The soft copy of the
raw sounding data was recorded continuously onto the Navigation Software. Simultaneously, the
position (coordinate) data was logged onto the navigation computer hard disk together with the
echo sounder transducer depth.
Figure 3. Echosounder Singlebeam
1.2 Bar Check Calibration
The bar check calibration was performed to obtain the accurate draft of the single beam echo
sounder transducer, or the actual transducer below water surface (see Figure 4). Calibration by bar
check shall be carried out at the commencement, during and on completion of every use of the echo
sounder. Calibration checks shall be repeated until the echo sounding has been shown to be within
±5 cm of the bar depth. Where the accuracy of the survey shall not exceed ±0.2 m of vertical
position.

1.3 RTK GPS Positioning System
The DGPS positioning system use the global reference from the satellite which is mobilised for
operations troughout the survey period. The principle of GPS is determining position using resection
measurement method from the satellites, for at least 4 satellites minimum (see Figure 5). Accuracy in
positioning depended upon the prevailing atmospheric conditions, survey location, and the number
of satellites observed available for the region at the moment. The GPS Positioning System used is RTK
system with radio telemetry at base station to ensure real time satellite correction signal with
approximately through cm accuracies (see Figure 6). Where the accuracy of the survey shall not
exceed ±2.0 m of horizontal position.

1.4 Navigation System
The differentially corrected GPS position data from the RTK GPS System was input to Hydro Pro
navigation software package (see Figure 7). The navigation tracking and logging system comprised a
desktop computer, video monitor, and a fix output interface. The Hydro Pro software runs on
compatible PCs. These PCs can be configured to allow connection to a remote external monitor and
additional ports for other input and output devices. Hydro Pro receives position data from GPS
receiver and process it to provide a real time alpha numeric or graphical navigation display on the PC
and external monitor. The data received from sensors such as echo sounder and GPS can also be
displayed and logged to a file.
Figure 7. Collecting data with Hydro Pro Navigation System
The vessel’s positions as well as depth from the echo sounder were continuously logged in to the
navigation system, that follow the route lines within the line intervals are determined and prepared

into the software before the survey begin. During the survey, annotations were generated with
automatic shot point depth intervals (see Figure 8).

Survey area is approximately 9 square km, with main survey line interval 30 m and cross line interval
500 m. Crossline is used to verify or double check the depth data of main line. With that line interval,
the total length of survey lines is approximately 347.8 km (see Figure 9). If the average survey
productivity is approximately 35 km/day, then in ideal condition the acquisition will take about 10
days to be completed. The total duration of operation can be estimated as below

Topographic survey will be conducted to cover the elevation data in very shallow water and
25m meter from the shoreline. The survey will use GPS RTK system with the same base
station that is used in bathymetric survey.
Figure 9. Topographic Survey using GPS RTK System
1.6 Tidal Observation (During Survey Only)
Tide Gauge will be installed in locations that will be adapted to conditions of the sea. Tidal levels will
be observed during the survey only and read at 10 minutes interval in order to get maximum results
(see Figure 10). Tidal observation data are needed to determine tidal correction for bathymetric
data. The tidal correction is determined by calculating the difference between the datum table and
the actual tidal data . Tide correction will be used as a correction depth refers to the datum table.
The elevation datum can be determined by measuring (levelling) the difference of Tide Gauge and
Benchmark using Auto Level (see Figure 11).

done in a safe and proper manner. All personnel will be equipped with personal safety equipments in
accordance with agreed procedures such as safety boots, helmet, and also life vest for personnel
who work in water. Safety induction shall be done before all works begin, and daily briefing every
morning before start activities.
As the works is in the water, a survey vessel will be used during the survey works. The vessel shall be
equipped with safety equipment and radio communication devices. All activities in the field will be
coordinatedly and approved by the coordinator of the authorized local port to minimize disruption
on the beach and / or activity of the port.
