Material Removal Rate in Machining

The document discusses material removal rate (MRR) formulas for various machining operations. For turning, boring, and parting operations, MRR is the product of mean cutting speed and uncut chip cross-section. For milling operations like slab, face, and end milling, MRR is the product of feed velocity and cross-sectional area removed. For shaping, MRR is the product of cutting velocity and cross-sectional area removed.

Boring, External threading and Parting operations

• The material removal rate MRR is the product of the mean cutting speed and the cross
section of the uncut chip. Thus
MRR = Ac Vav
Slab Milling

• The material removal rate MRR is the product of feed velocity (or feed rate) and the cross
sectional area of the metal removed. Thus,
MRR = Vf da dr = (Zc s0 )N da dr
where da = axial depth of cut
dr = radial depth of cut
Zc = no. of cutting edges
s0 = feed per tooth
Face Milling

• The material removal rate MRR is the product of feed velocity (or feed rate) and the cross
sectional area of the metal removed. Thus,
MRR = Vf da dr = (Zc s0 )N da dr
where da = axial depth of cut
dr = radial depth of cut
Zc = no. of cutting edges
s0 = feed per tooth
End Milling

• The material removal rate MRR is the product of feed velocity (or feed rate) and the cross
sectional area of the metal removed. Thus,
MRR = Vf da dr = (Zc s0 )N da dr
where da = axial depth of cut
dr = radial depth of cut
Vf = feed velocity or feed rate
Zc = no. of cutting edges
s0 = feed per tooth

Shaping

• The material removal rate MRR is the product of cutting velocity and the cross sectional
area of the metal removed. Thus,
MRR Ac V = st V
where s = feed/stroke
tr = depth of cut
v = cutting speed=NL
N= no. of strokes
L= length of the stroke
