SPECIFICATION – PIPING CLASS
Document n° SPE-PIP-CLAS-N1
3 GENERALE REQUIREMENTS
Engineering drawings, where provided, indicate the minimum line size, design working pressure or piping class, valves
required, etc. Unless otherwise specifically authorized by the COMPANY, the materials specified in this specification
shall be strictly adhered to in the design, purchasing and fabrication of each piping system. When the specified pipe,
valves and fittings or other materials cannot be obtained, substitution may be permitted with written approval by the
company.
Piping shall be located so as not to present overhead or tripping hazards. Minimum clear headroom for overhead
piping shall be 2.3 meters. Arrangement of piping shall allow for a minimum 0.762 meter aisle way through all traffic
areas.
Piping systems shall be designed so that all valves and instruments that require regular operation and maintenance
can be serviced conveniently. When this is impractical, ladders and platforms shall be used.
All pipes, valves and fittings shall be new and unused and shall have legible mill coding as to type and grade of
material. Mill certificates shall be furnished on all pipes.
No fittings of brass, aluminum, cast iron, malleable iron, steel-iron or semi-steel shall be used in hydrocarbon service.
Without exception, emergency shutdown valves are to be accessible from ground level and are to be located in clear
areas.
Temporary start-up cone or basket strainer shall be provided in suction lines to mechanical equipment, including, but
not necessarily limited to pumps, compressors, and mechanical meters, and shall be located as close as possible to
the inlet flange.
Eccentric reducers installed with the straight side up shall be used when line size reductions are required for pump
suction connections.
During fabrication, installation, sandblasting and painting, sand, dirt and other foreign matter shall be kept out of all
piping systems, instruments and mechanical equipment. The interior of piping systems shall be thoroughly cleaned by
CONTRACTOR, prior to acceptance by the COMPANY.
Sample, vent and drain valves shall be installed where indicated on the drawings.
Drain connections and valves shall be installed at all low sports in lines. Also vent connections and valves shall be
provided at all high sports where gas may be trapped.
Open ended valves shall be equipped with removable steel plugs, blind flanges, or nipples with screwed caps. Socket
weld valves shall have a welded nipple and a screwed cap at the open end. Blind flanges shall be drilled and tapped
and equipped with a ½” needle valve.
Changes in pressure rating in piping shall be made at block valves. A valve separating two pressure-rated systems
shall carry the rating of the higher pressure system.
A control valve station will take the pressure rating change at the outlet of the block valve downstream of the control
valve. Bypasses shall be installed on all control valves unless otherwise noted by the COMPANY. Spools shall be
provided to permit removing a control valve without removing isolating block valves. A drain valve shall be provided to
drain liquids trapped between isolating valves.
A check valve between two pressure-rated systems shall carry the rating of the higher pressure system.
A test ring or body tap shall be supplied for all check valves in process hydrocarbon service.
Insulating gaskets or inserts shall be installed when joining piping components of dissimilar metals to avoid galvanic
corrosion.
Where mechanical tubing and fittings are substituted for pipe or used to connect instruments, all tubing and tube
SPECIFICATION – PIPING CLASS
Document n° SPE-PIP-CLAS-N1
fittings shall be 316 SS and all tube fittings shall be SWAGELOK or PARKER A-LOK.
3.1 UNITS
All units are expressed in the international SI system, except for nominal bore sizes of pipes, which are in inches.
Pressure are gauge pressures (in bars), unless otherwise stated. Temperatures are in degrees Celsius.
Pressure/Temperature ratings are based of flanges are based on the latest version of the ASME B 16.5.
Design limits
Pipe wall thickness values that are specified in the piping material specifications are adequate for the full range of
pressure/temperature combinations tabulated.
The calculation of the pipe wall thickness values shall be in accordance with the ASME B 31.3 design code, and shall
include a corrosion allowance as well as mill tolerances as applicable. The weld efficiency coefficient of welded pipes
shall be equal to 1 (i.e. full radiography).
All carbon steel and low alloy steel materials shall incorporate a minimum corrosion allowance of 1.27mm. Stainless
steels, copper nickels, galvanized carbon steels, glass reinforced materials, and other corrosion resistant materials
shall be used without extra-thickness for corrosion allowance.
Additionally, schedule “5S” shall not be used for stainless steels, and schedule 80 shall be selected as a minimum for
pipes 2” diameter and below.
If the wall thickness required to contain the pressure is less than the “Minimum corroded thickness”, then the
“Minimum corroded thickness” shall be used for pipe wall thickness selection.
SPECIFICATION – PIPING CLASS
Document n° SPE-PIP-CLAS-N1
No pipe diameter smaller than ½’’ shall be used, except for instruments.
Pipe diameters of 1’’ ¼, 2’’ ½, 3’’½, 5’’, 7’’, 9’’ and 22’’ shall not be used. Equipment supplied with connections of these
sizes shall be adjusted to a standard size immediately adjacent to the equipment by means of a suitable reducing
fitting. Bushings shall not be used. For diameters above 24”, sizes 30”, 36”, 42”, 48”, 56” and 60” are preferred
dimensions.
All steel threaded connections shall have taper threads in accordance with ASME B 1.20.1 (NPT).
As a general rule, threaded joints are only authorized on utility lines where listed on the relevant piping material class.
Threaded joints shall not be used on process service, with the exception of instrument connections which are located
downstream a block valve; in such a case, the upstream side of this block valve shall be flanged or may be socket
welded on a nipple with a flanged joint immediately upstream to ensure further possible maintenance.
However, exceptions are allowed for use of threaded joints on process services. These exceptions shall be
documented and approved by COMPANY.
Teflon tape shall be used on all threaded joints. Care shall be taken to prevent extension of the tape into the line.
Excess tape shall be removed prior to painting.
Unions may only be used where threaded connections are authorized by this specification; in general, their use shall
be avoided wherever possible. They shall not be used in the following circumstances:
With the exception of galvanized systems which shall be joined together only by threaded connections, small bore
piping (1’’½ and smaller) shall be joined together by socket welding. Threaded connections may only be used where
permitted under paragraph 3.4 of this specification, and butt welding joints shall not be used.
In small bore welded piping (1’’½ and smaller), hot or cold-formed bends with a radius of 5D min may be used in lieu
of elbows if and where authorized in the relevant piping material class.
SPECIFICATION – PIPING CLASS
Document n° SPE-PIP-CLAS-N1
Hydraulic bolt tensioners on flange stud bolts 50mm in diameter and larger.
Bolting for use with bolt tensioners shall have the normal length increased by one bolt diameter. Bolt extensions
beyond the nut shall be protected from corrosion by cap.
3.7 VALVES
Ball valves
All ball valves are meant to be reduced bore, except otherwise indicated on the PID for each individual Ball Valve.
Valves of diameter small or equal than 1’’½ shall have a port size at least equal to the internal bore of the matching
pipe.
When ball valves are installed on lines that are insulated for any purpose, they shall be provided with extended spindle
suitable for making an insulation seal. Extended spindles shall be:
• For valves diameter 2’’ and smaller: 100mm, plus or minus 10mm
• For valves diameter 3’’ and larger: 150mm, plus or minus 10mm
For flanged valves, the extended spindle length is measured from the top of an end flange; for screwed or socket weld
valves, it is measured from the top of the valve body.
Gate and globe valves installed below ground level shall be located in valve pits, unless otherwise specified. Butterfly
valves may be buried, but they shall be provided with an extended spindle with oil-filled outer casing and an above
ground weatherproof gearbox.
Dual plate check valves are acceptable in lieu of swing check valves. Wafer-lug type check valves are acceptable in
lieu of flanged check valves.
Instrument connections on either piping or pressure vessels requiring either single or double block and bleed facilities
shall be made of an integrated manifold.
The side of this integrated manifold, which connects to the piping or the pressure vessel must be flanged, whilst the
instrument connection side may be threaded as required.
The bleed connection shall be ½’’ NPT F protected by a plastic plug (to be removed once the valve is installed on site).
All integrated (or monobloc) manifolds shall be in line type; the monoflange type is prohibited.
SPECIFICATION – PIPING CLASS
Document n° SPE-PIP-CLAS-N1
The use of slip-on flanges is not generally permitted. They may be used, however, where necessary, for tie-ins subject
to the following restrictions:
• Maximum pressure/temperature rating of class 300
• Maximum design temperature of 260°C
• Carbon steel materials only
• Their use is not permitted in sour, corrosive or severe cyclic services
Normally, butt weld elbows with a radius 1.5D shall be used for all sizes. Miter bends shall not be used except where
specifically agreed by the COMPANY. In case such an agreement is given, a re-run of the flexibility analysis of the
corresponding line is necessary. No agreement may be granted o lines requiring more than 5% radiographic
examination, or being stress relieved, or being subject to sour, corrosive or severe cyclic services.
3.10BRANCH REINFORCEMENT
