Rectification With Direct Steam Injection

Direct steam injection rectification involves injecting steam directly into the liquid in the tower bottom. This simplifies the construction by eliminating the need for a separate reboiler exchanger. It is used when distilling an aqueous solution containing a more volatile component and water. The main advantage is a simpler heater design that uses a sparger to inject the steam as small bubbles.

RECTIFICATION WITH DIRECT STEAM INJECTION

➢ The steam is injected as small bubbles into the liquid in the tower bottom.
➢ The reboiler exchanger is not needed.
➢ Used when an aqueous solution of more volatile component and water is being distilled
➢ The advantage of open steam lies in simpler construction of heater, which is a sparger.
