About 1988 Malaysia has 16th largest natural gas and has 22nd largest oil world.

Its
exports of the two commodities accounted for 15% of Malaysias foreign exchange income in
that year. PETRONAS (Petroliam Nasional Bhd) the exclusive ownership and control of both
resources rests ,the only Malaysian company to appear in the Fortune500 list. PETRONAS
companies, subsidiaries and joint ventures involve themselves in almost every aspect of the
oil and natural gas industry, extending across boundaries and upstream (exploring and
moving oil and gas) downstream (filter and distribution of products). In the 19th century oil
was found in Malaysia, meaning PETRONAS was not the first company to produce oil and
gas in Malaysia. In 1910 a group of the first leading private small scale oil company in
Sarawak was the only oil company in the area in 1963, when the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu
achieved independence from six years of English before merging Sabah and Sarawak into
Malaysia. Royal Dutch/ Shell has taken the Malaysian offshore oilfield in 1968 to maintain
their relationship. The federal government switched to Mobil, Esso and Continental licencing
in Terengganu on the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu is the most concentrated area. In 1974 the
area was discovered by natural gas during the year and quickly made. Large oil producers
from Sabah and Sarawak. About 81,000 barrels of oil per day can be produced by 1974
production of crude oil in Malaysia.
Several factors converged in the early 1970 to prompt the Malaysian government into
setting up a state company, as first proposed in the five year plan published in the 1971.These
were years in which power in the world oil industry began to shift away from the majors
,which then controlled more than 90% of the oil trade, toward the Organization of Petroleum
Exporting Countries , as well as a proliferation of new private and state companies joining
in the search for reserves. By 1985 the majors, reduced in number from seven to five, were
producing less than 20% of the world total. It seemed that Malaysia would either have to join
then trend or continue to leave its and gas entirely to Royal Dutch/Shell and Esso,
multinational corporations necessarily attuned to the requirements of their directors and
shareholders, rather than to priorities the government of a developing country might seek to
realize. Further, an agreement between Malaysia and , signed in 1969, had settled doubts and
disputes about each countrys claim over territorial waters and offshore resources, at a time
when both were heavily indebted to Organization for Economic Co-operation and
Development(OECD)government and banks as well as to the international Monetary
Fund(IMF)and the world Bank. Setting up a state oil and gas company, through which the
government could get international capital but avoid tangling with foreign oil companies or
governments, had worked for Indonesia why not for Malaysia as well the oil crisis 1973-1974
made the government even more aware of Malaysias dependence on foreign oil and foreign
capital in general.
New technologies have been developed as another factor for exploring and expanding
offshore outbursts, the vast expanses of sediments with shallow and calm water around have
made exploration of gas and oil more successful than mast parts of the world. Malaysian
crude oil has most parts of the world. Malaysia crude iol has become of high quality due to its
low sulphur content. Thats all the history of the PERTONAS .
