ES Tutorial 9 Questions PDF

This document contains 7 questions related to magnetic circuits. The questions involve calculating things like ampere-turns, reluctance, flux, and field intensity for various magnetic circuits consisting of materials like iron, steel, and air gaps. Diagrams are provided showing the geometry and components of the magnetic circuits described in each question. Formulas and data on material properties like relative permeability are provided to help with the calculations.

Q1. A ring has a diameter of 21cm and a cross-sectional area of 10cm . The ring is made up of
semicircular sections of cast iron and cast steel with each joint having an air gap of 0.2mm. Find
the ampere-turns required to produce a flux of 8 x 10-4 Wb. The relative permeability of cast
steel and cast iron are 800 and 166 respectively. (Neglect the fringing and leakage effects)

Fig.1.
Q2. A magnetic core in the form of a closed circular ring has a mean length of 30cm and cross-
sectional area of 1cm2. The relative permeability of iron is 2400. What amount of current will be
needed in the coil of 2000 turns, uniformly wound round the ring to create a flux of 0.2mWb in
iron? If an air gap of 1mm is cut through the core, perpendicular to the direction of the flux, what
current will now be needed to maintain the same flux in the air gap? (Neglect the fringing and
leakage effects)
Q3. Calculate the ampere-turns, reluctance, flux density and corresponding field intensity of a
magnetic circuit consisting of an air cored toroid with 500 turns and cross sectional radius of 6
cm, mean radius of ring as 15cm and coil current of 4A. (Neglect the fringing and leakage
effects).
Q4. Consider the magnetic circuit shown in Fig.2. Calculate (a) mmf (b) reluctance and (c) total
magnetic flux. Given air gaps specification as Ag1 = 0.2m2, lg1 = 3mm, Ag2 = 0.1m2, lg2 = 0.5mm.

Q5. (a) A steel ring having a mean circumference of 750mm and a cross-sectional area of
500mm2 is wound with a magnetizing coil of 120 turns. Using the data shown in Table 1,
calculate the current required to set-up a magnetic flux of 630mWb in the ring.
(b) An air gap is created in the above magnetic circuit with 1.1mm long and 2000mm2 in cross
section (due to fringing) calculate (i) the reluctance of the air gap (ii) the mmf to send a flux of
700 Wb.

Q6. The magnetic circuit given in Fig. 3(a)., consist of two different materials, cast steel and
sheet steel with dimensions of cast steel as Ac = 450mm2, lc = 50cm, and sheet steel as As =
300mm2 and ls = 30cm. Find the total mmf required to cause a flux of 360 Wb in the magnetic
circuit. Calculate the total reluctance of the circuit. (Use the BH curve given in Fig. 3(b))

Q7. For the magnetic circuit shown in Fig.4., compute the equivalent reluctance and the flux
density established in the bar part (I section) of the core structure (Neglecting fringing and
leakage flux). Consider the relative permeability of the material as 5000.
