OPTM7003 Assessment Guidelines
Discussion Forums
Marks 15%
During this course discussion forums are available on the Moodle site. Each discussion will focus on
a different aspect of eye condition or an issue in community eye health. Your contribution to these
discussions counts for a total of 10% toward your final mark and grade for this course. Your
contribution will be assessed on following points.
Requirements
The content of your posts needs to respond to the question posed for that week’s forum,
and should reflect your thoughts, knowledge and experiences. For example, if the question
asks about the impact of presbyopia in rural setting, you should talk about your own
experience or share the literature in this area from your geographic region.
Avoid simply agreeing or disagreeing with previous posts; always explain your answer.
Your post should show some depth of thought, hence do not post before you have given a
thought and participated in the activity on which the question is based. You can make more
than one post per week if you wish, but please do not post flippant, glib comments; make
sure that any post you make is well thought through and meaningful.
Posts should not be too lengthy; keep to a maximum of 100 words per post; longer or more
numerous posts are not necessarily better, and if there is too much discussion we may have
difficulty to keep up.
Marking Criteria
When marking your posts I will be looking for the following indicators:
• Post responds to the question posed for the week and do not deviate significantly from this.
Note that it is acceptable to include examples or scenarios to illustrate your point, but the
examples/scenarios need to be relevant to the question.
• Post seems to reflect experience and depth of thought around the question. This means that
your post needs to indicate that you have had experience related to the question and have
given some thought to this (for example, you have conducted a literature search, or have
thought about the various strategies to increase the uptake of eye care services).
