NAME : SHUBHAM NAVNATH TAWARE
ROLL NO. : M2A67
PRACTICAL CLASSTEST 8
AIM :
to study and use the Izod and Charpy Impact toughness test to find toughness of a
given material sample .
PRINCIPLE :
Impact tests are used in studying the toughness of material. A material's toughness
is a factor of its ability to absorb energy during plastic deformation. Brittle
materials have low toughness as a result of the small amount of plastic deformation
they can endure. The impact value of a material can also change with temperature.
Generally, at lower temperatures, the impact energy of a material is decreased. The
size of the specimen may also affect the value of the Izod impact test because it
may allow a different number of imperfections in the material, which can act as
stress risers and lower the impact energy
PROCEDURE :-
1. A Charpy V-notch specimen is placed across parallel jaws in the impact-
testing machine.
2. The pointer is set up to its maximum value(300 J).
3. The hammer is released from the initial height downward towards the
sample.
4. Observations and the energy absorbed are recorded and tabulated.
5. Steps 1-3 are repeated for another specimen.
Advantages and Limitation for Izod Test
Advantages:
It lowers distortion and decreases the ductile fracture
Used to evaluate the materials for overall hardness
The Izod impact test is a dynamic test in which a test piece V-notched test
piece, gripped vertically, is broken by a single blow of a freely swinging
pendulum. The blow is struck on the same face as the notch and at the fixed
height above it.
Limitation:
The making of the notch has been a problem. Initially, the radius of the
notch is crucial
It has an essential effect on the competence of the sample to absorb the
collision
Advantages and Limitation for Charpy Test
Advantages:
Able to Finds “notch sensitive” materials
Simple to perform
Can determine the minimum temperature of use
Limitation:
limitations due to its blunt notch
limitations due to its blunt notch
Addresses temperature, not stress or flaw size.
1. Select the test (Charpy or Izod).
2. Select and fit the respective striker in the hammer, first tighten the screws
of the wedge and then of strikers.
3. Fix the latching tube to corresponding position (for Charpy 140° position
and for Izod 90° position).
4. Place a specimen on the support of the block.
5. Bring the striker (hammer) closely to specimen and tough it lightly with
the specimen.
6. Pointer when touched to its carrier should read 300J line for Charpy and
170J for Izod. Otherwise correct it by losing and tighten the screw of the
pointer carrier.
APPLICATION :
Both Charpy and Izod impact testing are popular methods of determining impact
strength, or toughness, of a material. In other words, these tests measure the total
amount of energy that a material is able to absorb. This energy absorption is
directly related to the brittleness of the material. Brittle materials, such as ceramics
or glass, tend to have lower absorption rates than ductile materials like copper or
aluminum
