Using Technology

It is apparent that in today’s day and age, the chances of any person, including educators, of

running into technology has skyrocketed. I remember as a child in the early 2000s, the internet

was just becoming a thing and I was fortunate to grow up with it as it became more intertwined

with everyday life.

The ultimate goal of EDT 180 was for its students to achieve computer literacy, which is then

expanded upon into two categories, being able to discuss issues surrounding computers,

software, and the use of technology in the classroom and workplace fluently, and the student

demonstrating their ability to use computer applications for productivity, data analysis, and

problem solving.

The first sub goal of achieving computer literacy is a big one that I feel that I have been able to

develop personally throughout this course. I have always had a general idea of what Microsoft

and the capabilities it has to offer but being directed and shown examples of how to do so was

extremely beneficial to me to promote classroom and workplace fluently. A prime example of

this would be using Microsoft Excel. At my current place of employment, I work a lot with

Excel Spreadsheets and had a general idea of how to use the program. Once we had the class that

overlooked some key functions on how to use Excel, I was impressed! For example, I did not

know that you could lock the first column so that it would follow on screen if you were to scroll

to the right. I usually make schedules so just this feature made it that much easier for me to keep

my place when creating work documents.

The second sub goal, that to demonstrate my ability to use computer applications for

productivity, data analysis, and problem solving was also refined throughout this course. An

example of this is when we used the program “Piktochart”. This website was suggested to be

used when we were making blogs for our website. The user interface was extremely easy to work

with and I really enjoyed how there were preset formats of different styles of pages to use

depending on what you were trying to accomplish. I also enjoyed our PowerPoint presentation

and learning the C.R.A.P. principles. While I was in the military, we would often be familiar

with the term “death by PowerPoint” as PowerPoint was the go-to format for most people to

disseminate information. When we did our PowerPoint project, we were given much freedom

and also an overlay of the C.R.A.P. principles. With this, I was able to make a presentation that

was captivating and interesting, something that I thought would be impossible to do with

PowerPoint.

All in all, I believe this class is extremely beneficial to not only educators, but anyone else who

may need a general overview of common applications and websites that may be encountered.

Even with the coding section of our lesson, even though I did not quite get it and do not tend to

pursue learning code, it is good to know and interesting to see how code works.
