-: Introduction
An Oldham coupling has three discs, one coupled to the input, one
coupled to the output, and a middle disc that is joined to the first two by
tongue and groove. The tongue and groove on one side is perpendicular to
the tongue and groove on the other. The middle disc rotates around its center
at the same speed as the input and output shafts. Its center traces a circular
orbit, twice per rotation, around the midpoint between input and output
shafts. Often springs are used to reduce backlash of the mechanism. An
advantage to this type of coupling, as compared to two universal joints, is its
compact size. The coupler is named for John Oldham who invented it in
Ireland, in 1821, to solve a problem in a paddle steamer design.

coupling :-
is a mechanism for power transmission (or) torque from one shaft to
another shaft not co-linear shaft. It mechanism is possible for without any
backlash during the operation. It specially designed application for this
purpose (Backlash). That is better than straight jaw coupling such as
performance and efficiency. The Oldham coupling having three disc for its
configuration. When the center disc designed in tongue and groove
formation, it is used to sandwich each other both disc. The disc made from
material such as plastics. Then other both disc are used to connect the drive
. and made from stainless steel (or) aluminum material

Working principle of Oldham coupling :-
When three disc, one disc coupled to input of shaft connect and another disc
coupled to output of torque. The Center disc joined each other disc. The
tongue and groove has one side is perpendicular to other side of tongue and
groove. The spring is used to this mechanism for reduce the coupling
backlash .During power transmission of one drive to another, the center disc
is slide on torque of each hub. The sliding motion include small amount of
angular and axial misalignment. They are useful in application with parallel
misalignment.
design of Oldham couplings :-
Ruland Oldham couplings are a three-piece assembly with a balanced design
comprised of two hubs and a center disk. This allows for a highly
customizable coupling that allows the user to combine clamp and set screw
hubs with inch, metric, keyed, and keyless bores in sizes ranging from 1/8”
to 1-1/8” and 3mm to 30mm. The center disk is available in three materials
to allow designers to fit the coupling to their application requirements.
While Oldham couplings can accommodate small amounts of angular and
axial misalignment, they are especially useful in parallel misalignment
accommodating up to 10% of their OD in misalignment. All Ruland Oldham
couplings are carefully made from select North American bar stock in our
Marlborough, MA USA factory under strict controls using proprietary
processes and RoHS3 and REACH compliant.
Hubs
This section will allow you to select hubs to be used individually or as
part of an assembly. Ruland manufactures oldham couplings in aluminum
with an anodized finish for improved lubricity and stainless steel for
corrosive applications. Hubs are manufactured with a proprietary machining
process that creates a smooth interaction between the hub tenons and disk
allowing for the longest service life in the industry. Torque transmission is
achieved by mating the slots on the center disk to the drive tenons on each
hub. Oldham couplings can help protect expensive machine components by
acting as a torque limiter during overload. The disc breaks cleanly and does
not allow for any power transmission. Oldham couplings are also electrically
isolating since disks are non-conductive figure (3) .

Disks
This section will allow you to select disks to be used individually or as
part of an assembly. Ruland offers users the ability to tailor the performance
of oldham couplings to match their application needs as disks are available
in three materials, acetal for high torsional stiffness and zero-backlash, nylon
for shock absorption and noise reduction, and PEEK for high temperature
and low outgassing. The slots of the disk mate onto the tenons of the hub
with a slight press fit to allow the coupling to operate with zero backlash. In
the event of disk wear or failure, the disk can be easily replaced and the
oldham coupling's original performance restored. Disks with a center hole
. are available upon request to allow full shaft penetration .figure (4)

Oldham Bundle
This section will allow you to select the components to create a complete
coupling. Please note that all orders ship unassembled. When you are
ordering or downloading CAD all components are individual. They must be
specified on any purchase order with a minimum of two part numbers. The
combinations listed are a complete offering combining all available hubs and
disks.

Why Ruland ?
Proprietary hub machining process leaves a smoother surface for
interaction between hub and disk resulting in significantly longer life.
Balanced design reduces vibration and allows for higher RPM.
Accommodates a high amount of parallel misalignment (up to 10% of
the outer diameter) with very light bearing loads.
Three-piece design allows for ease of customization, installation, and
blind assembly.
Disks are available in nylon for dampening of impulse loads and noise
reduction, acetal for high torque capacity and zero-backlash, and
PEEK for high temperature and low outgassing.
Stops transmission of power during overload conditions.
Manufactured and stocked at our Marlborough, Massachusetts
factory. Special designs are available.
All Ruland oldham couplings are RoHS3 and REACH compliant.
Advantages of oldham coupling
Low moment of inertia
high torsional stiffness
Easy installation in blind
The Oldham coupling is a most expensive method of power
transmission between drive without backlash.
Compact size of shape
The electrical isolation through center disc are not possible.
Because it made from plastic materials.
It act as sort of fuse in machine
When break of first disc, the torque limit are exceed in center disc
and preventing the torque transmission.
Disadvantages
When damage of coupling, the machine component is most costly.
Relatively small angular misalignment.
Application of Oldham coupling
Robotics and servo applications
Printer and copy machines
PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
This Ruland oldham coupling bundle contains OST8-4-SS, OD8/13-PEK,
and OST8-3-SS. To make a complete assembly you must specify two hubs
and one disk. All parts have an OD of 0.500" (12.7mm) and assembled
length of 0.625" (15.9mm). OST8-4-SS is a stainless steel set screw hub
with a 0.250" bore. OD8/13-PEK is a PEEK disk. OST8-3-SS is a stainless
steel set screw hub with a 0.188" bore. It operates with low bearing loads
protecting sensitive system components such as bearings and has a balanced
design for reduced vibration at speeds up to 4,500 RPM. Hardware is metric
and tests beyond DIN 912 12.9 standards for maximum torque capabilities.
Hubs are manufactured in our Marlborough, MA factory under strict
controls using proprietary processes from bar stock that is sourced
exclusively from North American mills. All components in this bundle are
RoHS3 and REACH compliant.

Installation Instructions :-
How to Install an Oldham Coupling Ruland ?
1. Align the bores of the OST8-4-SS oldham coupling hubs on the shafts
that are to be joined and determine if the misalignment parameters are
within the limits of the coupling. (Angular Misalignment: 0.5°
Parallel Misalignment: 0.004 in (0.10 mm), Axial Motion: 0.002 in
(0.05 mm))
2. Rotate the hubs on the shaft so the drive tenons are located 90° from
each other.
3. Place a torque disk so one groove fits over the drive tenons of a hub
and center the disk by hand.
4. Insert a shim with the thickness of the coupling's axial motion rating
into the groove of the torque disk.
5. Slide the tenons of the second hub into the mating groove in the disk
until it touches the shim stock.
6. Fully tighten the M3 screw(s) on each hub to the recommended
seating torque of 0.73 Nm using a 1.5 mm hex torque wrench.
7. Remove the shim stock to leave a small gap between the top of the
drive tenons
