Experiment #03 Introduction To Transformer, Diode Bridge, Voltage Regulator and To Making of DC Power Supply Objective

This document describes an experiment to introduce components used in a DC power supply and how to build one. The components covered are a transformer, diode bridge, capacitor, LED, and voltage regulator. It explains that a transformer is used to step up or down AC voltage, a diode bridge converts AC to DC, a capacitor stores energy, an LED emits light when current flows through it, and a voltage regulator maintains a constant output voltage. It provides details on their workings and then outlines the procedure to construct a basic DC power supply that uses these components to convert an AC input voltage to a regulated 5V DC output.

Experiment #03: Introduction to transformer, diode bridge, voltage

regulator and to making of Dc power supply

.
Objective:
 To introduce the above components
 To familiar the working principal of components
 To know about the making of DC power supply.

Apparatus:
 Transformer
 Diode bridge
 Capacitor
 LED
 Voltage regulator
 Multimeter

Theoretical Background:

 Transformer: A transformer is a device which are used to step up

or down the input voltage or current. It depends upon number of coils. It
consists of two electrically isolated coils and working on faraday law. Of
mutual induction in which an emf is induced in the secondary coil of
transformer by changing the magnetic flux by flowing of current or
voltage in the primary coil.
 Types of transformer:
a) Step up transformer
b) Step down transformer
c) Impedance transformer
 Diode bridge: It is an arrangement of four diodes in a bridge circuit
configuration some polarity of output for either polarity of input. This is
commonly used for conversion Of AC into DC voltage is known as bridge
rectifier.
 Capacitor: it is a device which store the electrical energy. The
arrangement of capacitor is the two-conductor plate separating by isolating
medium.
 LED: It is a semiconductor light source that emits the light when
current flowing through it.
 Voltage Regulator: it is designed by such a way that automatically
maintained a constant voltage level. It generates fixed voltage output that

remain constant for any change in an output voltage. It maintains voltage
level under any circumstances.
Pin configuration of 7805 regulator:

Pin no. Used as Purpose

1 Input pin used for unregulated voltage
2 Ground Common for both input and output
3 Output pins Output voltage regulated 5V

How to make DC power supply:

Procedure

:
 First check the primary and secondary coil of transformer by using multimeter. For this
purpose, we turn on the multimeter and turn the knob on resistor, Greater value of
resistance(300-700Ω) shows the primary coil, while smaller value of resistance (2-5 Ω)
shows the secondary coil. The incoming supply to primary coil is 220V while the output
from secondary coil is converted 12 V.
 After the transformer, the electrical energy is stored in the capacitor.
 Then voltage regulator (7805) 12V supply is converted into 5 V supply.
 5V supply is finally received to Resistor (to prevent LED from burning) is connecting in
series with LED. And It emits the light.
 The emitting of LED confirms that the AC supply is converted into DC supply.
 The following sketch show the circuit diagram for DC supply.
