Weekly warm-ups
Why do warm-ups?
Just like an athlete, we have to gradually limber up our muscles to be able to play well.
They're TINY little muscles on our hands and fingers, but they still need warming up!
Scales and exercises are perfect to get your muscles AND your brain warmed up! © This
week's warm-ups are in C Major and use the C-string for violas and cellos.Fiddle/Folk Tune:
Little Brown Jug
Traditional

Upbeat/Pick-up,
The first measure only has ONE note in it. This note is called an upbeat or a pick-up. In
Little Brown Jug it comes on the & of beat 2. When counting off this song, count 1 & 2
before coming in on the pick-up note. *Don’t forget to start on an up bow!
Slurs
This song has two slurs in it. Slurs are a curved line that connect two or more notes. Play
these notes in the same bow stroke. In Little Brown Jug, both slurs are on a down bow.
Rhythms
There are two different sixteenth note rhythms in Little Brown Jug. Sixteenth notes are
twice as fast as eighth notes (each gets % beat), and are counted: 1 e & a. When
combining two sixteenths into one eighth (this is exactly what you've practiced with
fractions in school!!), count two of the sixteenth subdivisions on the eighth.

Symbols
This is a note with both a staccato and tenuto mark: Staccato means to
play notes shorter, with a space in-between them. Tenuto means to hold a
note for its full value. Huh??? Here's what to do: Play these notes with space
in-between, but use LOTS of bow on them. ©

your notes “touching” each other so that there’s no space between them,

LETIT GO

SeKey of C Major
One of the first things a musician MUST do when starting a new piece of music is to look
at the time signature (how many beats per measure) and the key signature. This song is
in C Major — NO sharps and NO flats ~ all notes are naturals. Why does this matter? You
have to know what key you're in so that your fingers will be in the correct spots.
Otherwise you'll play notes out-of-tune, which doesn’t sound very nice...
Finger pattern: G-string: high 2 finger (normal)
D-string: low 2" finger for F-natural
A-string: low 2” finger for C-natural
E-string: low 1” finger for F-natural, low 2 finger for G-natural
Ties
A tie isa curved line connecting two or more notes of the SAME pitch. You will hold the
note as long as the value of the combined notes. You can have tied notes within a slur,
so don’t let the two curved lines throw you. @ =~
Syncopations
‘Syncopated notes fall on weak beats instead of strong beats. An example of this is notes
that are on the &’s of the beats, instead of the numbers. Here are some examples:

‘Syncopated rhythms are EXTREMELY common in popular music. Pop music is fun to
play, but complicated to read, rhythmically. Lots of tie

2S =Key of G Major
The Theme from Jurassic World is in G Major. That means you have to be careful about
your 2™ finger on all of your strings. Don’t give up and put it in-between F and Fit, or ALL,
of your 2" finger notes will be out of tunel!
Finger pattern: D-string: high 2™ finger for Fit

v vSyncopations
‘Syncopated notes fall on weak beats instead of strong beats. An example of this is notes
that are on the &s of the beats, instead of the numbers. An example is measure 9:
1e 283848 There are also a lot of measures in this song
that start OFF of the beat,
Measure 1) Measures 3, 5, 7, 14, 18:
ma 33k 1ETET EGE
Thankfully, most pop songs are fairly repetetive, so even if you do get a tricky rhythm,
it’s likely to be repeated often through the song. Take the rhythm at measure 22 & 23:
3e& d%e G3 4 & teh se M3e 4 &
Every measure from here to the end of the song has the SAME rhythm!! The note names
change, but the rhythm is the same.
C# on the G-string
When in the key of D Major, we have F#’s and C#’s in our key signature. This means that
ALL F’s and C’s on our instrument are automatically sharp...including the Con the G-
string in measures 24 & 28:
*This is played with high 3” finger on the G-string (closer to the bridge}
t- *Although C# is in our key of D Major, the sharp sign appears as a
reminder to raise your 3° finger. It is called a cautionary accidental because it’s
reminding you of a pitch already within your key signature.
