Complex Technology Problem

This document provides the guidelines and rubric for a strength of materials course assignment on selecting economical beam designs. Students must choose S-shape or wide-flange beams to support given loadings based on allowable stress ranges, considering cost, weight, and safety factors. The submission requirements specify using American standards tables and deadlines. The rubric assesses clarity of free body diagrams, stress analysis accuracy and dimensions, design justification to reduce stresses and costs, and organization.

Complex Technology Problem  (CTP)

Course Code: MT‐233

Course Name: Strength of Materials

Concerned Teacher: Sheeraz Ali

Problem Statement
1)  Select the most economical S‐shape beam to support the loading shown. Knowing that the range of allowable stress
for the used is from 150 to 170 MPa. The selected beam should be economical by cost, should be light weight, should
have appropriate factor of safety. The students can choose different options by strong arguments and use table of
American standard “S” shape to select your required beam

2)  Select the most economical wide‐flange beam to support the loading shown. Knowing that the allowable stress for the
steel  used  is  155‐170  MPa.  The  selected  beam  should  be  economical  by  cost,  should  be  light  weight,  should  have
appropriate factor of safety. The students can choose different options by strong arguments and use table of American
standard “wide flange” shapes to select your required beam

Submission Guidelines for Students
 Students should submit the assignment on given date. After deadline, no reports will be accepted.
 Students can choose different standards to solve the numerical within defined range of factor of safety
 Separate marks will be given for neat and organized
