CALCULATIONS FROM EQUATIONS
1. When limestone is heated , calcium oxide is formed. Calculate the mass of calcium oxide when
25g of limestone is heated.
CaCO3 (s) -> CaO (s) + CO2(g)
2. Titanium is manufactured by heating titanium IV chloride with sodium.
TiCl4(s) + 4Na(s) -> Ti(l) + 4NaCl(s)
What mass of sodium is required to produce 1 tonne of titanium?
3. 2.67g of aluminium chloride was dissolved in water and an excess of silver nitrate solution was
added to give a precipitate of silver chloride.
AlCl3(aq) + 3AgNO3 -> Al(NO3)3(aq) + 3AgCl(s)
What mass of silver chloride precipitate would be formed?(RAMs of Al = 27, Cl = 35.5 , Ag = 108)
4. Calcium hydroxide is manufactured by heating calcium carbonate strongly to produce calcium
oxide , and then adding a controlled amount of water to produce calcium hydroxide.
CaCO3(s) -> CaO(s) + CO2(g)
CaO(s) + H2O(l) -> Ca(OH)2(s)
(a) What mass of calcium oxide would you produce from 1 tonne of calcium carbonate?
(b) What mass of water would you need to add to that calcium oxide?
(c) What mass of calcium hydroxide would you eventually produce?
(RAMs of H = 1; C = 12; O = 16; Ca = 40)
5. Chromium is manufactured by heating a mixture of chromium (III) oxide with aluminium
powder.
Cr2O3(s) + 2Al(s) -> 2Cr(s) + Al2O3(s)
(a) Calculate the mass of aluminium needed to react with 1 tonne of chromium (III) oxide .
(b) Calculate the mass of chromium produced from 1 tonne of chromium oxide.
(RAMs of O = 16; Al = 27 ; Cr = 52 )
6. If the mineral pyrite , FeS2, is heated strongly in air , iron (III) oxide and sulfur dioxide are
produced. What mass of (a) iron (III) oxide and (b) sulfur dioxide could be made by heating 1
tonne of an ore which contained 50% by mass of pyrite ?(RAMs of O =16; S = 32; Fe = 56)
4FeS2(s) + 11O2(g) -> 2Fe2O3(s) + 8SO2(g)
1
7. Calculate the volume of hydrogen (at rtp) which can be obtained by reacting 0.240g of magnesium
with an excess of dilute sulfuric acid .(RAM = 24; molar volume =24,000cm3 at rtp)
Mg(s) + H2SO4(aq) -> MgSO4(aq) + H2(g)
8. What mass of potassium nitrate would you have to heat in order to produce 1 dm3 of oxygen at rtp?
(RAMs of N = 14, K = 39 , O = 16; molar volume = 24 dm3 at rtp)
2KNO3(s) -> 2KNO2(s) + O2(g)

11. Lead is extracted from galena , PbS. The ore is roasted in air to produce lead (II) oxide,PbO.
2PbS(s) + 3O2(g) -> 2PbO (s) + 2SO2(g)
The lead (II) oxide is the reduced to lead by heating it with carbon in a blast furnace.
PbO(s) + C(s) -> Pb(I) + CO(g)
The molten lead is tapped from the bottom of the furnace.
Calculate : (a) the mass of sulfur dioxide produced when 1 tonne of galena is roasted .
(b) the mass of lead that would be produced from that 1 tonne of galena.
