Chapter One

Homebush Boys High School Prefects 1 | P a ge

2016
Introduction
Prefects are the school role models. They are students with excellent record of behaviour, attendance,
punctuality and uniform. Their roles in the school are diverse and they range from assisting staff during
assemblies to carrying out canteen duties. Prefects are led by the School Captain, School Vice-Captain and the
Senior Prefect. Each prefect has to perform duties around the school to ensure we maintain the correct
ethos.

Prefects are selected though a democratic process where they nominate themselves to be part of the prefect
body through a nomination form that has to be signed by at least one staff member. Then the students and
teachers vote for the prefects through Moodle. Votes are then counted and the results tallied.

Successful prefects then attend the Prefect Camp, which is designed to help the prefects be familiar with each
other and to build essential team skills and leadership skills.

Most of our prefects stem from holding previous roles in the school, for example the SRC or the Interact
Club.

School Prefects are expected to:

 Observe the school rules at all times

 Be dressed appropriately at all times
 Maintain an excellent attendance record
 Be punctual for expected duties
 Maintain a perfect behavioural record
 Be positive and enthusiastic
 Encourage and motivate peers
 Be co-operative, helpful, well-mannered, trustworthy and responsible.
 Be respectful toward teachers, peers, and the school environment
 Display leadership qualities: confidence, initiative, problem solving skills
 Be willing to take on extra responsibility
 Work collaboratively, independently and complete tasks without supervision
 Become a good ambassador for the school
 Be a positive presence around the school
 Work in the interest of the school.

and capacity to fulfil the
role of School Leader.

Nomination for School Prefect

I have read the Student Leadership Handbook and understand the roles expected of a student in a
leadership position at Homebush Boys High School.

I understand that, if I wish to be School Captain or Vice-Captain, I first need to nominate myself
for the role of a Prefect.

I would like to put my name forward for election to be a prefect at Homebush Boys High School.

 If I am successfully elected to be a prefect and am then involved in a serious breach of

the School Code of Conduct or fail to carry out my leadership duties, I might be demoted
from the position and have my badge withdrawn temporarily or permanently.

The Principal will have the final say in the appointment of all Student Leaders.

Prefect Election System at HBHS

Application process: Students tick the criteria they believe they have demonstrated through their years at
HBHS.

 Application Form – give specific evidence to support their application according to the criteria. They may
also include a brief and concise letter. Simply completing all of the boxes in no way implies a
guarantee of selection. There are two additional questions at the end of the Application Form.

Students have to attach the Nomination form for prefects.

 Review process: the applicants are reviewed by the Principal, Year Adviser, Student Leadership
Coordinator and the Prefect Coordinator. A list is finalised and the students who have moved
through to the election phase for the position are informed.

 A whole school election is held via Moodle and/or during roll call. The prefect list is announced.

 Through internal elections, the prefects elect their Captain, Vice-Captain and Senior Prefect.

The students, who are elected in the prefect body, will be called upon to coordinate activities, serve on
committees, undertake a variety of school duties, represent the school and be role-models for the rest of the
student body throughout the year.
