The Structure and Function of The Human Brain: Lesson 7

The document discusses Lesson 7 of Grade 11 Personal Development, which provides an overview of the human brain and how its hemispheres and quadrants can aid in learning. It specifically discusses different theories about why people think and act the way they do. The human brain is the center of the nervous system and controls all organs of the body through receiving sensory information and muscle/hormone responses. It contains billions of neurons connected by synapses and has gray matter for neurons and white matter for axons and dendrites. The lesson activity sheet asks students to research the basic functions of different parts of the brain.

Lesson 7

Are you an organized person? Or you are the type who is impulsive? Are you
logical in your approach to the problems or are you more emotional? Lesson 7 will
present an overview of the human brain and how its hemispheres and quadrants can be
used to aid in learning. Specifically, it will discuss the different theories why we think
and act the way we do.

THE HUMAN BRAIN

The human brain is the center of man’s nervous system and has a centralized
control of all organs of the body. Its operating mechanism involves receiving information
from our different sensory organs and acts on it via muscle activity and by secreting
chemicals called hormones

The Structure And Function Of The Human Brain

BASIC FACTS ABOUT THE HUMAN BRAIN

. It is the most complex organ, containing 15 -33 billion neurons

. Compared to all vertebrates, the human brain is the largest when body size is
considered.

. It weighs about 1.5 kilograms.

. It has “ gray matter “ known as neurons and “ white matter “ known as axons and
dendrites.

. It has synapses that serve as connector of the neurons
