Week 7 Assignment
1) After assembling the 60V battery pack, it is now required to spot weld the bus bar and cell
terminal together to avoid any mis-contact during the use.
Cell terminal and bus bar is of 6061T6 aluminium metal and has thickness of 1mm and 0.2mm
respectively. The spot-welding machine generate spots of 1.5mm diameter. 2 spot welds are made.
Calculate the Force (N), the weld can withstand. (𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒, 𝐴𝑙 = 276𝑀𝑃𝑎 & 𝑆ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 = 0.5 ∗
𝑇𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑙𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠)
4∗𝐹
𝑆ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠, 𝜏 =
𝑖 ∗ 𝜋 ∗ 𝑑2
Where, ‘i’ is no. of spot welds.
Answer:
𝜎
𝜏= = 138 ∗ 106
2
𝑆𝑏𝑢𝑠𝑏𝑎𝑟 = 0.2𝑚𝑚
𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑏 = 1𝑚𝑚
(𝑆𝑏𝑢𝑠𝑏𝑎𝑟 + 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑏 )
𝑆𝑎𝑣𝑓 = = 0.6𝑚𝑚
2
𝑑 = 1.5𝑚𝑚
𝑖=2
Calculate F:
F1: We know that for shear loading,
4 ∗ 𝐹1 𝜏1 ∗ 𝑖 ∗ 𝜋 ∗ 𝑑2 138 ∗ 106 ∗ 2 ∗ 3.14 ∗ 0.00152
𝜏1 = 𝑜𝑟 𝐹1 = = = 487𝑁
𝑖 ∗ 𝜋 ∗ 𝑑2 4 4
we find that the force of 487N is sustainable by the welded joint.
Valid Answer: 485N to 490N
2) An 8-bit ADC is used for reading the Voltage across a 5V Sensor. If the ADC feeds a value of
200 to the Microprocessor, find out what was the voltage in V (correct upto 2 decimal
places), sensed by ADC across the Sensor.
Answer:
𝐴𝐷𝐶 𝑅𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 = 200
𝑆𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑅𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 = 5𝑉
𝑁𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐴𝐷𝐶 = 28 − 1 = 256 − 1 = 255
We know that:
𝐴𝐷𝐶 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝐴𝐷𝐶 𝑅𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 256−1 200
𝑆𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒
= 𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝐴𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 ⇒ 5
= 𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝐴𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒
Solving for:
200
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝐴𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑔 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 = ∗ 5 = 𝟑. 𝟗𝟐𝟏𝑽
255
Valid Answer: 3.89V to 3.93V
3) In the series circuit below, the head-drop (in
m) across the pipes R1, R2 AND R3 is respectively
(a) 3/7, 18/7, 3
(b) 6/7,15/7, 3
(c) 6/7, 19/7, 17/7
(d) None of the above
Answer: (b)
Solution: hB – hA = q * 7+2 =-q*2 +8 -q*5
Figure 1
2+7q = 8 -2q-5q => 14 q = 6
q = 6/14 = 3/7
H=q*R. Hence, h1 = 6/7; h2 = 15/7; h3 = 3
4) In the parallel circuit below, the head-drop (in m) across R1
and R2 respectively is
(a) 4 and 4
(b) 6 and 2
(c) 2 and 6
(d) 8 and 8
Answer: (d)
Solution: Figure 2
Right away, since R1 and R2 are connected in parallel across
a pump of head 8m, it is apparent that the head drop across each of them is 8m
Alternatively, hB – hA = 6q2 = 12q1 = 0+8-0. Hence,
q1 = 8/12 = 2/3
q2 = 8/6 = 4/3
q1+q2 = q = 2
h1 = q1*R1 = 8
h2 = q2*R2 = 8
