Lab Session 5
1. Objective:
To practice the Trim, Extend, Mirror, Offset, Erase, Sketch Plane Entities and Extruded cut feature
and to practice a 3D Part drawing (3D Practice Drawing-3).
2. Theory:
2.1. Trim Entity
Select the trim type based on the entities you want to trim or extend. All trim types are available
with 2D sketches and 2D sketches on 3D planes.
You can use any of the following trim options:
• Power trim
• Corner
• Trim away inside
• Trim away outside
• Trim to closest
Trimming with Power trim
You can use Power trim to trim multiple, adjacent sketch entities by dragging the pointer across
each sketch entity.
To trim with the Power trim option:
1. Right-click the sketch and select Edit Sketch.
2. Click Trim Entities (Sketch toolbar) or Tools > Sketch Tools > Trim.
3. In the Property Manager, under Options, select Power trim .
4. Click in the graphics area next to the first entity, and drag across the sketch entity to trim.
The pointer changes to as it crosses and trims the sketch entity. A trail is created along the trim
path.
5. Continue to hold down the pointer and drag across each sketch entity you want to trim.
6. Release the pointer when finished trimming the sketch, then click.

2.3. Offset entity
To create a sketch offset:
1. In an open sketch, select one or more sketch entities, a model face, or a model edge.
2. Click Offset Entities (Sketch toolbar) or Tools > Sketch Tools > Offset Entities.
3. Set the properties in the Offset Entities Property Manager. When you click in the graphics
area, the offset entity is complete. Set the properties before you click in the graphics area.
4. Click or click in the graphics area.
An Offset Entities sketch_relation_Offset_Entities.gif relation is created between the new sketch
entity and the selected entity. If the original entity changes, the new entity updates to maintain the
offset.
You can create cap ends while using the Offset Entities tool to offset open loop, one-directional
sketch entities in 2D sketches, for arc and line Cap end types.
To change the size of a sketch offset:
Double-click the offset’s dimension and change the value. In a bi-directional offset, change the
dimensions of the two offsets individually.
You can reverse the direction of offset sketch entities with the Reverse Direction functionality.
To reverse sketch offsets:
1. In the Dimension Property Manager, under Primary Value, click .
2. Double-click the offset dimension of a sketch entity. In the Modify dialog box, do one of
the following:

2.4. Mirror Entities
Select Mirror Entities to mirror pre-existing 2D sketch entities on a plane, and then select the
entity about which to mirror. If you want to first select the entity about which to mirror, and then
sketch the entities to mirror, select Dynamic Mirror Entities .
You can mirror sketches about any these entities:
• Centerlines
• Lines
• Linear model edges
• Linear edges on drawings
As you select the sketch entities to mirror, Mirror Entities provides the following options:
• Select some or all entities to mirror.
• Include both the original and the mirrored entities, or only the mirrored entities.
Select the pre-existing entities, and the entity about which to mirror. Selected entities mirrored.
General Capabilities
Applies to 2D sketches and 2D sketches created on 3D sketch
planes.
• Mirror to only include the new entity, or both the original and
the mirrored entity.
• Mirror some or all of the sketch entities.
• Mirror about any type of line, not just a construction line.
• Mirror about edges in a drawing, part, or assembly.
When you create mirrored entities, the SOLIDWORKS software
applies a symmetric relation between each corresponding pair of
sketch points (the ends of mirrored lines, the centers of arcs, and
so on). If you change a mirrored entity, its mirror image also
changes.

Sketch Plane Starts the extrude from the plane on which the
sketch is located.
Surface/Face/Plane Starts the extrude from one of these entities. Select a
valid entity for Surface/Face/Plane . The entity can be
planar or non-planar. Planar entities do not have to be
Page 10 of 23
parallel to the sketch plane. The sketch must be fully
contained within the boundaries of the non-planar
surface or face. The sketch follows the shape of the non-
planar entity at the starting surface or face.

Offset Starts the extrude on a plane that is offset from the
current sketch plane. Set the offset distance in Enter
Offset Value.
Direction 1
Some fields that accept numeric input allow you to create an equation by entering = (equal sign)
and selecting global variables, functions, and file properties from a drop-down list. See Direct
Input of Equations in Property Managers.
Direction Determines how the feature extends. Set the end condition type. If
1 necessary, click Reverse Direction to extend the feature in the
opposite direction from that shown in the preview.

rather than a true offset. If necessary, select Reverse offset to
offset in the opposite direction. Example: Translate Surface
Up To Select the body to extrude to in the graphics area
Body for Solid/Surface Body . You can use Up To Body when
making extrusions in an assembly to extend the sketch up to the
selected body. Up To Body is also useful with mold parts, if the
body you extrude to has an uneven surface.
Mid Plane Set the Depth .
Direction Select a direction vector in the graphics area to extrude the sketch in a direction
of other than normal to sketch profile. Example: Specifying the Direction of
Extrusion Extrusion
Flip side (Extruded cuts only). Removes all material from the outside of the profile.
to cut By default, material is removed from the inside of the profile.
Default cut Flip side cut
Normal (Sheet metal cut extrudes only). Ensures that the cut is created normal to the
cut sheet metal thickness for folded sheet metal parts.
Merge (Boss/Base extrudes only). Merges resultant body into an existing body if
result possible. If not selected, the feature creates a distinct solid body.
Link to (Sheet metal parts only). Automatically links the depth of an extruded boss to
Thickness the thickness of the base feature.
The Link to thickness option in the Extrude PropertyManager lets you link the
dimension of the present extrusion to the dimension of the existing extrusion
to which it is coincident. If the depth of the original extrusion changes, the
new one changes to match it.
This is available only when sheet metal features are present in the Feature
Manager design tree. The Link to thickness option is useful in sheet metal
parts because the part must be of uniform thickness.
Draft Adds draft to the extruded feature. Set the Draft Angle. Select Draft
On/Off outward if necessary.
No draft
10° draft angle inward 10° draft angle outward
Direction 2
Set these options to extrude in both directions from the sketch plane. The options are the same
as Direction 1.
Thin Feature
Use the Thin Feature options to control the extrude thickness (not the Depth ). A Thin
Feature base can be used as a basis for a sheet metal part. Example: Extruding Thin Features
Thin Feature is required when using an open contour sketch. Thin Feature is optional when using
a closed contour sketch.
Type Sets the type of thin feature extrude.
One-
Sets the extrude Thickness in one direction (outward) from the sketch.
Direction
Mid-Plane
Sets the extrude Thickness equally in both directions from the sketch.
Two- Allows you to set different extrude thicknesses for Direction 1
Direction
Thickness and Direction 2 Thickness .
Auto-fillet (Open sketches only). Creates a round at each edge where lines meet at an angle.
corners
Fillet (Available if Auto-fillet corners is selected). Sets the inside
Radius radius of the round.
Cap ends Covers (caps) the end of the thin feature extrude, creating a hollow part. You must also
specify the Cap Thickness . This options is available only for the first extruded body in a
model.
