Objective:
To study the effects of boundary layer and examine the boundary layer for rough and
smooth plates on air flow bench.
Theory
Boundary Layer
Boundary layer, in fluid mechanics, is a thin layer of a flowing fluid in contact with a
surface .The flow velocity varies from zero at the wall up to Ue at the boundary.

Shape factor
Laminar Shape Factor = HL = 2.59 .Turbulent Shape Factor = H T = 1.3
For laminar flow, the boundary layer separates when the shape factor approaches
round about 3.5 while for turbulent flow the separation o boundary layer occurs at
shape factor of 2.2.
Dynamic pressure
Stagnation pressure
Stagnation pressure is the static pressure at a stagnatian point in a fluid
flow.
4
Procedure:
1) Attach the boundary layer apparatus to the Air Flow Bench’s duct and secure the clamps.
2) Fix the flat plate inside the test section with sharpened end upwards and tighten the clamps.
3) Attach the pitot tube to manometer and note down the reference pressure from the
manometer.
4) Start the air flow from the airflow bench and set the flow rate to the maximum. Also note
down the static pressure of air from the multi-tube manometer.
5) Bring the tip of pitot tube to the surface of plate. When the pitot’s tip is at the plate surface,
the displacement from the plate surface to the center of tip is 0.2 mm. Note down the pitot
tube pressure reading form the manometer.
6) Now traverse the pitot tube away from the plate surface in small intervals (1 mm) with the
help of micrometer.
7) Note down the corresponding pressure from the manometer and the displacement of the
pitot’s tip from micrometer.
8) Now loose the plate’s screw and change the surface of plate. Repeat the same procedure for
the other surface until the pressure reading becomes stable.
