KOMODO DRAGONS

The komodo dragon, or to give its scientific name Varanus komodoensis is a

giant lizard that grows to a length of 3 metres and has an average weight of 136

kilograms. They are found on the Indonesian island of Komodo, after which

they are named, and a few neighbouring islands. Komodo dragons feed on

deer and other mammals. The young can climb trees although fully-grown

dragons do not have this ability. All dragons are good swimmers. Because of

their size and speed, they can be dangerous to human beings. Despite this, they

are a popular tourist attraction because of their resemblance to dinosaurs.

However, they are not relations of dinosaurs. Dragons are now protected

species because their numbers are quite small.
