Tutorial (Method of Virtual Works)
1. Use the method of virtual work and determine the horizontal displacement of joint B of
the truss. Each steel member has a cross-sectional area of 300 mm2. E = 200 GPa.
(Ans: 1.50 mm ⃪)
2. Determine the horizontal displacement of joint B of the truss. Each member has a
cross-sectional area of 1800 mm2, E = 200 GPa. Use the method of virtual work.
(Ans: 1.01 mm →)
3. Determine the vertical displacement of point B. The cross-sectional area of each
member is indicated in the figure. Assume the members are pin-connected at their end
points. E = 200 GPa. Use the method of virtual work.
(Ans: 0.942 mm ↓)
4. Remove the loads on the truss shown in the figure below and determine the horizontal
displacement of point C if members AB and BC experience a temperature increase of
∆T = 100˚C. Take A = 1200 mm2 and E = 200 GPa. Also, α = (1.8)10-6/˚C.
5. Determine the displacement of point C of the beam having a moment of inertia of I =
20(106) mm4. Take E = 200 GPa.
(Ans: 11.25 mm ↓)
6. Use the method of virtual work and determine the slope at A of the beam made from
steel. E = 200 GPa, I = 100(106) mm4.
(Ans: 4.5 x 10-3 rad)
7. Determine the slope of point B of the steel beam shown in the figure below. Take E =
200 GPa, I = 60(106) mm4.
(Ans: 0.194 x 10-3 rad)
8. Use the method of virtual work and determine the horizontal deflection at C. EI is
constant. There is a pin at A. Assume C is a roller and B is a fixed joint.
(Ans: 9.62 kNm3 /EI →)
9. Use the method of virtual work and determine the vertical deflection at the rocker
support D. EI is constant.
(Ans: 59.4 kNm3 /EI ↓)
10. Determine the slope of point C on the frame. Take E = 200 GPa, I = 200(106) mm4.
(Ans: 0.00125 rad)
