Assign

The document outlines an assignment for CE 131 (Structural Analysis) due on March 26, 2025, which includes various problems related to deflections and slopes in pin-jointed frames using the virtual work method and Castigliano’s second theorem. It specifies calculations for vertical and horizontal deflections at various points in different figures, with provided material properties and dimensions. Students are required to submit their solutions at the instructor's pigeonhole.

CE 131 (Structural Analysis)

ASSIGNMENT NO. ___ (Due Date March 26, 2025 – Submit at my pigeonhole)

1. Find (a) the vertical (downward) deflection at E, and (b) the horizontal (to the right)
deflection at B using virtual work method in the pin-jointed frame shown in Fig.1 .
Assume L/EA = 0.3 mm/kN for all members. Check your answers using Castigliano’s
second theorem.

2. Find the horizontal (to the right) deflection at point C in the frame shown in Fig. 2 if
E = 200 kN/mm2. Take the cross sectional area as 900 mm2 for members BC and CD, and
600 mm2 for members AB and BD. Use virtual work method and check your answers
using Castigliano’s second theorem.

3. Find the vertical (downward) deflection at point E in the frame shown in Fig. 3. Assume
L/EA = 0.1 mm/kN for all members. Use virtual work method and check your answers
using Castigliano’s second theorem.

4. Compute the deflection at B and the slope at C in Figure 4. Given: EI is constant. Use
virtual work method and check your answers using Castigliano’s second theorem.

5. Compute the deflection at midspan and the slope at A in Figure 5. EI is constant. Express
the slope in degrees and the deflection in mm. Assume a pin support at A and a roller
at D. E = 200 GPa, I = 832 x 106 mm4. Use virtual work method and check your answers
using Castigliano’s second theorem.

6. Compute the horizontal and vertical components of the deflection at C in Fig 6. E = 200
GPa, I = 240 X 106 mm4. Use virtual work method and check your answers using
Castigliano’s second theorem.

7. (a) Compute the slope at D and the horizontal displacement of joint B in Fig 7. EI is
constant for all members. Consider only bending deformations. Given: I = 250x106 mm4,
E = 200 GPa. (b) If the horizontal displacement at joint B is not to exceed 50 mm, what
is the minimum required value of l? Use virtual work method.
