Considerations for Horizontal Wells

 Over Bending throughout buildup section - Know the bend limit of the
pipe
 Compression on entering horizontal section - Take care as you enter into
the horizontal section
 Slotting – typically no more than 3% area
 IJ v.s. T&C – Less drag Size Series ID OD Bend Limit

STAR Well
The Fiber Glass Systems well simulation analysis program was developed
to analyze actual well conditions so that the correct tubing products can
be recommended to the customer. Often a series of conditions will be
evaluated using the worst and best case scenarios, thereby assuring the
customer that the product will give years of trouble-free service.

Installation

Slips/Elevators
 Standard slip type elevators
most commonly used on IJ
tubing.
Installation

Lowering Consideration
 Tubing/Casing
+ Proceed Slowly, avoid obstructions.
+ Compressive strength, do not exceed 75% of the tensile rating. (Short Term)
+ Reaching total depth, stacking out or setting down temporary is common
practice, use caution against setting down heavily.
+ Avoid abrupt stops which can result in dynamic tensile loadings.
+ Stop tubing motion prior to setting slips.
+ Exercise caution when running couplings through slips and blowout
preventers.
+ Weight the casing, fiberglass casing is up to 50% buoyant.
+ Differential pressure, do not exceed the internal or collapse pressure rating
while, conditioning mud or cementing.

 Size
+ 4 ½”, 5 ½”, and 9 5⁄8”
 Quantity
+ 3,000 ft. of 5 ½” STAR 2,000 psi Casing was installed in an open hole completion
cemented in place. The test consist of producing CO2 directly through the
casing. The need for a packer and tubing has been eliminated. The hole size,
casing size, and well head size have all been reduced, therefore, furthering
reducing expense.

injection temp. 85° F, bottom hole temp. 110 ° F. First 42 wells used two joints
of steel at bottom. The 36 wells were installed using a polished bore receptacle
with a latch instead of an inflatable packer. A special dement shoe was used on
32 wells, the liner was stopped above the original perforations. This saved on
steal tubing, perforating and acidizing.
