Benefits of Dance

Increase Strength and Overall Health- In addition to the above health benefits, dancing has
been shown to help improve other markers not just of improved health, but quality of life. An
American Heart Association study showed that older patients who suffered heart failure, and who
subsequently enrolled in a waltz class, had improved oxygen levels, artery elasticity and other
cardiac indicators compared to people who did other forms of exercise. What’s more, the dancing
group experienced better sleep, increased sexual activity and reduced anxiety levels.
Boost Memory- dancing may boost your memory and prevent you from developing dementia as
you get older. Science reveals that aerobic exercise can reverse volume loss in the hippocampus,
the part of the brain that controls memory.
Improve Flexibility- they also increase flexibility and reduce stiffness. You can skip the ballet
slippers and still reap the benefits of ballet by practicing some simple stretches at home
Increase Balance- a study in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity that showed tango
dancing can improve balance in aging adults. Dancing requires a lot of fast movement and good
posture, so frequent dancing will help you stabilize and gain better control of your body.
Healthy Heart and Lungs- Dance is a great activity for those at risk for cardiovascular disease.
People with heart failure who took up waltzing improved their heart health, breathing, and
quality of life significantly compared to those who biked or walked on a treadmill for exercise,
noted an Italian study.
Reduce Stress- In a controlled study in the Journal of Applied Gerontology, researchers found
that partner dance and musical accompaniment can help bring about stress relief.
Diminish Depression- Dancing really does lift your spirits, according to a study in that tested
the effects of dancing on people with depression.
Lose Weight- A study in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology found that an exercise
program of aerobic dance training is just as helpful for losing weight and increasing aerobic
power as cycling and jogging.
Increase Social Improvement & Confidence- One of the biggest benefits of dance is increased
confidence.  Learning and mastering a new skill, in general, is great for your confidence.  It can
give you a sense of accomplishment and pride. Another wonderful benefit of dance is an
increased social connection.  Both solo and partner dance can be a great way to meet new people.

FILIPINO FOLK DANCES

• The Philippines has many popular folk dances which have evolved and changed as they
have been passed down from generation to generation. Although a particular dance might
be performed slightly differently from one region to the next, its remains true to its roots.
Here are some of the most popular dances from the region.

The Itik-Itik
The best description of the Itik-Itik is that the steps mimic the way a duck walks, as well as the
way it splashes water on its back to attract a mate. According to popular tradition, the dance was
created by a lady named Kanang who choreographed the steps while dancing at a baptismal
party. The other guests copied her movements, and everyone liked the dance so much that it has
been passed along ever since.

The Tinikling
The Tinikling is considered by many to be the Philippines' national dance. The dance's
movements imitate the movement of the tikling bird as it walks around through tall grass and
between tree branches. People perform the dance using bamboo poles. The dance is composed of
three basic steps which include singles, doubles and hops. It looks similar to playing jump rope,
except that the dancers perform the steps around and between the bamboo poles, and the dance
becomes faster until someone makes a mistake and the next set of dancers takes a turn.

Maglalatik
The Maglalatik is an indigenous dance from the Philippines in which coconut shell halves that
are secured onto the dancers' hands and on vests upon which are hung four or six more coconut
shell halves. The dancers all male perform the dance by hitting one coconut shell with the other
sometimes the ones on the hands, sometimes, the ones on the body, and sometimes the shells
worn by another performer, all in time to a fast drumbeat. Like many native Filipino dances, it is
intended to impress the viewer with the great skill of the dancer, and in some Filipino Martial
Arts (FMA) circles, it has been noted that the manlalatik "consists of a trapping and boxing
method hidden in a dance."

BALLROOM (RECREATIONAL AND COMPETITIVE)

Ballroom dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed

both socially and competitively around the world. Ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed
on (stage, film, and television.)
Ballroom dance may refer, at its widest definition, to almost any type of partner dancing
as recreation.
The term 'ballroom dancing' is derived from the word ball which in turn originates from
the Latin word ballare which means 'to dance' (a ball-room being a large room specially
designed for such dances).

The definition of ballroom dance also depends on the era: balls have featured popular dances of
the day such as the Minuet, Quadrille, Polonaise, Polka, Mazurka, and others, which are now
considered to be historical dances.

Early Modern Age

The first authoritative knowledge of the earliest ballroom dances was recorded toward the end of
the 16th century, when Jehan Tabourot, under the pen name "Thoinot-Arbeau", published
in 1588 his Orchésographie, a study of late 16th-century French renaissance social dance.

Toward the latter half of the 17th century, Louis XIV founded his 'Académie Royale de Musique
et de Danse', where specific rules for the execution of every dance and the "five positions" of the
feet were formulated for the first time by members of the Académie.

19th century
The waltz with its modern hold took root in England in about 1812; in 1819 Carl Maria von
Weber wrote (Invitation to the Dance), which marked the adoption of the waltz form into the
sphere of absolute music. In the 1840s several new dances made their appearance in the
ballroom, including the Polka, Mazurka, and the Schottische.

Early 20th century

The first was a movement away from the sequence dances towards dances where the couples
moved independently. This had been pre-figured by the waltz, which had already made this
transition. The second was a wave of popular music, such as jazz, much of which was based on
the ideas of black musicians in the USA.
The third event was a concerted effort to transform some of the dance crazes into dances which
could be taught to a wider dance public in the US and Europe. Here Vernon and Irene
Castle were important, and so was a generation of English dancers in the 1920s,
including Josephine Bradley and Victor Silvester. These professionals analyzed, codified,
published and taught a number of standard dances.

Competitive Dancing
The International Olympic Committee now recognizes competitive ballroom dance. It has
recognized another body, the World Dance Sport Federation (WDSF), as the sole representative
body for dance sport in the Olympic Games.
Ballroom dance competitions are regulated by each country in its own way. There are about 30
countries which compete regularly in international competitions. As competition dances, they are
organized under the rule of the World Dance Council

Top 5 Ballroom Dances

Cha Cha
The Cha Cha is a lively, flirtatious ballroom dance full of passion and energy. The classic "Cuban
motion" gives the Cha Cha its unique style. Partners work together to synchronize each
movement in perfect alignment.

  Foxtrot
The Foxtrot is a ballroom dance that is lots of fun and simple to learn...an excellent dance for
beginners. The Foxtrot is a smooth dance in which dancers make long, flowing movements
across the floor.

Jive
Jive is a ballroom dance style that originated in the United States from African-Americans. It is a
lively form of Swing dance and a variation of the Jitterbug.

Lindy Hop
The Lindy Hop is the ballroom dance considered to be the father of all Swing dances. It is known
for its unique, athletic style, and often contains aerial jumps, twists, and flips.
Mambo
The Mambo is one of the most sensual and emotional Latin American ballroom dances. Swaying
hip movements, facial expressions, arm movements and holds all add to the sensuality of the
dance.

Benefits of Ballroom Dancing

Socialization - Most new students look to take their new skills to a specific venue such as a
cruise, wedding or party. There are additional opportunities for socialization such as studio
parties, dance competitions and clubs. Ladies and gentlemen alike will be pleased to know that
dancers LIKE to dance. For men, good manners and gentlemanly behavior are rewarded by a
"Yes, thank you" response. For ladies, ballroom dance provides the ability to enjoy dance and
music in a safe and fun environment.

Fitness - Dancing rarely feels like exercise. However, participation in practice sessions, drills,
lessons and social events provides an incredible amount of aerobic exercise and physical
conditioning. Many dancers experience weight loss and muscle toning benefits as a direct by-
product of participating in dance.

Agility - Dance steps and movements require using muscles and postures which are new to most
people. The end result is that your body will become more flexible and nimble. Also increased
grace and posture are by-products of dance technique and movement.

Mental Acuity - Dancing demands a high level of mental energy. Planning pattern movements,
lines of direction and appropriate responses to floor conditions and partner directions hone a
dancer's cognitive skills. Studies have confirmed side benefits such as staving off Alzheimer's.

Confidence and Self Esteem - the combination of increased mental and physical capabilities is
an extraordinary boost to self-confidence. Dancing skills can be readily transferred to other
sports and leisure activities.

Look Better - proper dance posture and carriage add to improved physical conditioning and
result in a dynamic, new you. Straighter spines, balanced footwork and arm-framing all result in
the person your parents expected when saying "Stand up straight". Better posture results in a
more attractive figure and a healthier skeleton.

Have Fun - last, but not least, dancing is FUN! Music, companionship and increased personal
activity levels all combine to enrich your lifestyle in ways you could not have imagined.

Dancing will make your life better.

WHAT IS CHEERDANCE?

Cheer dance is the dance portion of cheerleading, where tumbling and stunts are not
included. It is made of 4 parts, namely pom dance, jazz, hip-hop and line dance. Each
performance is about 2.5 minutes, and is judged by the dance skills and choreography, as
well as team coordination. This sport is full of energy, from the competitors’ smiles and
acting expressions.
Cheerleading is an activity in which the participants (called "cheerleaders") cheer for
their team as a form of encouragement. It can range from chanting slogans to intense
physical activity. It can be performed to motivate sports teams, to entertain the audience,
or for competition. Competitive routines typically range anywhere from one to three
minutes, and contain components of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting.

History of Cheer dance

“Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah! Tiger! S-s-s-t! Boom! A-h-h-h!” That was one of the first documented
cheers used by an organized cheerleading program. The cheer is called the 'Locomotive', and is
still used today at Princeton University. Cheerleading was originally an all-male activity, and the
students would cheer at football practices and games for both home and visiting teams. They
even had special cheering sections designated in the stands for the games!

Mark Pebbles brought cheerleading to the University of Minnesota in 1890. There, he created
individual cheers for each sport. Johnny Campbell, a University of Minnesota student, is
considered the first cheerleader by coordinating an entire team to lead the crowd in those cheers
from November 2, 1898 on. During that time, the University of Minnesota created a “Yell
Squad” of six men, which later turned into a fraternity in 1905. Cheerleading was a male-

Dominated sport until the 1920’s. Some famous men who were cheerleaders include Franklin D
Roosevelt, Dwight D Eisenhower, Jimmy Stewart, George W. Bush, Samuel L Jackson and Steve
Martin.

Nowadays, it is hard picturing all-male cheerleading teams. That was mostly the case until the
1920’s. The University of Minnesota was also conveniently the first cheerleading squad to allow
women to join in 1923. However, other schools did not start following suit until the 40’s, mostly
due in part to the onset of World War II. As more and more men were being drafted, it allowed
the opportunity for more females to join the sport. From that point on, women dominated the
sport and during the 50’s, the popularity of cheerleading increased evermore. It was not until the
1970’s that cheerleading was instigated in almost every school–from grade school through
college.

Basic Cheerleading Motions

There are a few motions that cheerleaders learn and use right from the beginning. Even when
you advance to higher levels in your cheer career, you will still use these basic motions over and
over again.
Benefits of Cheer Dance

Physical Endurance
Cheerleading is a great cardio workout! Cheers typically only last a couple of minutes so it is
necessary to repeat high-energy routines. Choreography contains not only dance but also
tumbles, jumps and sometimes stunts, all which require great stamina especially to maintain a
big smile throughout the routine as well.

Strength Training
Cheerleading is a whole body workout. You will build strength by rehearsing weekly, particularly
in your lower body, shoulders and core.

 Flexibility
Stretching exercises within each class will develop your flexibility, increasing your range of
movement. This will help improve your high kicks, jumps and tumbles within the sequences.

Coordination
Coordination is a key element of cheerleading. You will improve your ability to learn routines
and perform them in time with your team mates.

Team player and Leadership skills

It can also improve leadership skills by building confidence to speak up for the good of the team.
Learning to listen to both team mates and the instructor is crucial for undertaking tumbles and
stunts safely.

Positive Mood
Cheerleading in particular is all about portraying a positive outlook with upbeat chants and a
huge smile which is sure to leave you in a good mood.
