This morning you will know how to identify
the intonation pattern used in the sentence and
to value the importance of using proper
intonation in speaking.
Intonation is the rise and fall in pitch of the
voice in speech. Correct intonation is one of
the aids to good speech. It also carries a lot of
meaning. The speakers tone reveals very
much what he really feels at the moment or
what he thinks and feels towards a person.
So there are two basic intonation patterns and
these are rising and falling intonation.
Let us start from the rising intonation. Rising
intonation is used in questions answerable by
yes or no, in friendly or polite inquiry.

answerable by yes or no questions.
Now let us proceed to falling intonation.
Falling intonation is used at the end of
imperative sentence and questions not
answerable by yes or no.
Examples of Imperative statements:

Close the door.
Questions not answerable by yes or no.

What are you doing?
