Assignment 2: notes on chapters 1.1-1.10

The first chapter talks about the shape and principle of contrast and the definition of what

a line is and how different techniques are used to draw a line and how a line is used. Element is

describing the different words and concepts to describe art. Principles are the technique

combined with the elements to create art. The first chapter also talks about shapes and how they

can be classified as geometric and organic. Geometric shapes are just regular lines made into a

shape and another classification is Organic shapes which showcase the natural shape of natural

living things. Many artists use contrast also in their artwork to showcase the different types of

elements to demonstrate what they are drawing.

Form in chapter 1.2 explains that a Form is a two-dimensional object that is also called a

shape and can allure to be three-dimensional. Volume is the space occupied by a form of shape.

Mass is the weight an object has and could also mean the artist is trying to convey weight

through an illusion. The texture is a concept of art that applies to feeling and sensation or even

remembering how something feels. Color is described as the way the human eye sees white light

being bounced off a surface something.

Color is also an element of art that can change our mood and change the mood in a piece

of artwork. Additive color is how it is created from the light and hue is how the color is defined

or characterized. Medium is how the artist uses the material to create art. The color wheel is all

the different ways light can be mixed to create a different outcome. Motion in art is mostly

implied because artists back then didn’t have a way to capture motion.

. The artist tries to show motion being made or motion that already happened. Other

forms of motion and Time in the art can be referred to as telling a story of the past or a way of

telling the viewer of action is transitioning. Unity is the harmony of the elements coming

together to create art that just naturally goes together. Variety is different ideas, elements, or

materials used to make art. Balance in the art can be referred to how the visuals need to be

counterbalanced or the whole artwork seems unsuccessful. Scale is the way a work of art

conveys a meaning or idea in a small way or in a bigger way depending on how big the artwork

is made.

The Focal Point is what the artist wants the viewer to notice in their artwork. Contrast

can be used to help the artist showcase the main point of their artwork. Lines can also be useful

in assisting the artist in creating a focal point in their artwork way by leading the eyes of the

viewer to the start and finish of a line. The pattern is something repetitive that can be seen in art

to help combine elements and help unify an artwork. Rhythm in art is using the same shapes and

colors to sometimes change the artwork altogether. Engaging with Form is a way of analyzing

how artists elements and principles in their artwork and describing everything the artist is using

to make the artwork.
