Combinatorial Problems Tutorial

This document discusses combinatorial analysis and finding the number of ways to select items from different groups. It provides examples such as selecting texts from book categories, choosing student committee members with conditions on gender, and picking farm animals from available options. The number of choices is calculated using factorials and multiplication based on the number of items in each group and restrictions in the selection.

Combinatorial Analysis

Tutorial 2:

Q1) Suppose a bookcase shelf has 5 history texts, 3

sociology texts, 6 anthropology texts, and 4 psychology
texts.
Find the number n of ways a student can choose:

i) One of the texts.

The number of ways to choose one of the texts is :
n = 5 + 3 + 4 + 6 = 18 ways.

ii)One of each type of text.

The number of ways to choose one of each is :
n = 5 X 3 X 4 X 6 = 360 ways.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Q2) A class contains 10 students with 6 men 4 women.
Find the number n of ways to:

i)Select a 4 – member committee from the students.

The number of ways to select a 4 members :
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎 .𝟗 . 𝟖 .𝟕
n = ∁𝟏𝟎
𝟒 = ( 𝟒
)= = 𝟐𝟏𝟎 𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔.
𝟒 . 𝟑 . 𝟐 .𝟏

ii) Select a 4 - member committee with 2 men and

2women.
The number of ways to select 2 of each :
𝟔. 𝟓 𝟒. 𝟑
n = (𝟔𝟐) (𝟒𝟐) = . = 𝟏𝟓 . 𝟔 = 𝟗𝟎 𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔.
𝟐. 𝟏 𝟐. 𝟏

iii) Elect a president, vice president, and treasurer.

The number of ways to select 3 from men is :
n = 𝐏𝟑𝟏𝟎 = (𝟔𝟑) = 𝟔 . 𝟓 . 𝟒 = 𝟏𝟐𝟎 𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Q3) A farmer buys 3 cows , 2 buffalo, and 4 hens from a
man who has 6 cows, 5 buffalo and 8 hens. Find the
number m of choices that the farmer has.

The number of choices that the farmer has is :

𝟔 .𝟓 .𝟒 𝟓 .𝟒 𝟖 .𝟕 .𝟔 .𝟓
m = ∁ (𝟔𝟑) ∁ (𝟓𝟐) ∁ (𝟖𝟒) = . .
𝟑 .𝟐 .𝟏 𝟐 .𝟏 𝟒 .𝟑 .𝟐 .𝟏
= 𝟏𝟒𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q4) Suppose a bookcase shelf has 5 history texts, 3

sociology texts , 6 anthropology texts, and 4 sychology
texts .
find the number n of ways a student can choose:

a)One of the texts.

The number of ways to choose one of the texts is :
n = 5 + 3 + 6 + 4 = 18 ways.
b) One of each type of text.
The number of ways to choose one of each is :
n = 5 X 3 X 6 X 4 = 360 ways.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q5) A history class contains 8 male students and 6

female students.
Find the number n of ways that the class can select :

a) 1 class representative.
The number of way to choose 1 representative is :
n = 8 + 6 = 14 ways.

b) 2 class representative, 1 male and 1 female.

The number of ways to choose one of each is :
n = (𝟖𝟏)(𝟔𝟏) = 𝟖 . 𝟔 = 𝟒𝟖 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬.
c) 1 president and 1 vice president.
There are 14 ways to select the president and 13
ways to select the vice president. So, the number of
ways is :
n = 14 . 13 = 182 ways.
