Ciencia de Los Materiales Difusion Ejemplos

The document describes three problems involving the calculation of carbon diffusion during gas carburization of steel gears. Problem 1 asks to calculate the time needed to increase the carbon content below the surface of a 1018 steel gear to 0.35% weight from 0.18% weight, given the surface content is 1.15% weight. Problem 2 asks to calculate the carbon content at 0.9 mm below the surface of a 1020 steel gear after 4 hours of carburizing, given the surface content is 1% weight. Problem 3 asks to determine the temperature at which an iron-carbon alloy was carburized given the surface carbon was maintained at 1.1% weight and the content at 3.5 mm below the surface

Problema 1

The time required for this diffusion process is calculated using Fick’s second law,

Problem 2

A gear made of 1020 steel (0.20 wt % C) is to be gas-carburized at 927°C. Calculate the

carbon content at 0.90 mm below the surface of the gear after a 4.0-hour carburizing time.
Assume the carbon content at the surface of the gear is 1.00 wt %. D (C in γ iron) at 927°C =
1.28 × 10-11 m2/s.

Solution:

D (C in γ iron) at 927°C = 1.28 × 10-11 m2/s.

>>>> Therefore the carbon content at 0.9 mm below the surface is 0.311 wt%.

Problem 3

An FCC iron–carbon alloy initially containing 0.10 wt% C is carburized at an elevated

temperature and in an atmosphere wherein the surface carbon concentration is maintained
at 1.10 wt%. If after 48 h the concentration of carbon is 0.30 wt% at a position3.5 mm below
the surface, determine the temperature at which the treatment was carried out.
