Questions:
1. What is the importance of testing the materials that we used in construction?
Before we start any construction or any building, we really need to
identify and test the materials to be used. It is important because it will be
a big factor on the project. Some of this includes the testing of soil quality
and its properties, quality of the cement, concrete, wood, and steel.
Listed are the reasons why testing of materials is important:
• It can identify possible problems before the construction starts.
• Selecting the right or appropriate materials to be used.
• Determine if the materials are right to the budget
• Evaluate the risks to the builders or to the environment and to
mitigate them.
• It also avoids any unnecessary repairs and renovation.
• It is also to meet the requirements of the law.
• It can determine the strength and the durability of the building or
project.
2. How important is to have a proper procedures and guidelines in testing of materials?
Having proper procedures and guidelines in testing of materials is a must. With
proper procedures and guidelines comes a smallest inaccuracy and inconsistencies of
the result. The results of the tests will determine if the material is right for the project. It
will also identify possible problems on the materials. Some institutes like ASTM and
AASHTO provides standards for the procedures and guidelines in testing.

3. What are the factors that we have to consider in selecting materials for construction
projects?
Selecting the appropriate materials for projects is an important step for
construction. It can identify the durability and strength of the project. Some of the factors
to consider in choosing the right materials are:
• Cost / Prices of the materials
o Initial Cost / Ongoing
o Frequency and Cost of Maintenance
o Salvage Value
o Comfortability
o Useful Life
• Availability
• Aesthetic Appeal
• Sustainability
• Strength and Durability
• Environmental Requirements
• Safety of the Environment and to the Builders
