Adjustment Neuroticism Dimensional Inventory (ANDI)

Introduction
Adjustment is defined as a relationship between the individual and his environment, and this
relationship is learnt through experience, so adjustment is a form of learning. Adjustment is a
process by which a living organism maintains a balance between its needs and circumstances that
influence the satisfaction of those needs. An individual not only adapts biologically to different
kind of physical demands and pressures but also needs to adjust psychologically and emotionally
as he has to live and lead life in interdependence with other individuals throughout life.
Neuroticism is a tendency to experience negative emotions easily such as anger, depression,
anxiety or vulnerability. It is sometimes called emotional instability. Personalities of this type are
characterized by self-centrism anxiety and avoidance.
By different factorial analysis, three comprehension dimensions of personality have been pin
pointed-introversion-extroversion, adjustment neuroticism and tough mindedness-tender
mindedness. People in the area of positive pole of this dimension are adjustable, well organized,
satisfied with their life and efficient in their work. Their emotions are well controlled. Negative
Pole of this dimension is termed neuroticism. In psychological literature, this pole has been
attributed by several names as emotionally, emotional instability, maladjustment. Those who are
emotionally unstable and dominated by negative emotions are much more prone to be neurotic.
In this way, neuroticism is proneness to be neurotic. Neurotic personalities are characterized by
dissatisfaction, irritability, imparity, self-centeredness, carelessness, escapism anxiety and worry.
Profuseness and strong intensity of these negative conditions give rise to such distorted forms of
maladjustment as neuroses and psychoses.
Psychological studies have revealed that the dimension of adjustment neuroticism is very
comprehensive and complex. It has following component dimensions:
1. Self- Esteem- Self Inferiority
2. Happiness- Depression
3. Calmness- Anxiety
4. Naturality- Obsessiveness
5. Independence- Dependence
6. Feeling of Being Healthy- Hypochondriasis
7. Innocence- Guilt Feeling

Test Description
The Adjustment Neuroticism Dimension Inventory (ANDI) of Singh and Bhargava (1999)
measures seven dimensions of adjustment neuroticism through 105 questions which are
presented in a mixed way.

Rationale and Utility


Present test is based on theory well established by recent research findings. It evaluate second
dimension of personality namely adjustment neuroticism and its seven components measures of
components. Measures obtained from this test are for more clear and specific than other test
meant for this purpose.
Measures of component dimensions provide opportunity for selecting persons according to
special situations and obtaining useful and   minute clinical evaluation. The test has more utility
in creating insight into one’s own personality. By identifying one’s merits and demerits, one can
establish meaningful adjustment with specific situation.
Here different factors of mal-adjustments are measured. Test items selected for measurement
have been drawn from normal field of life. Therefore present test is valid for imitate utility.
Though this test does not reveal such forms of neuroses which are taken as diseases by clinical
psychologist, yet those persons, whose scores fall in higher category (i.e., 9 or 10 is 10 sten
scores) should consult clinical psychologist or psychiatrist and make a special effort to increase
one’s own understanding. Measures of this test provide for warning to the individual tested. If
someone’s score fall in lower category (i.e., below 4 sten score), they may be treated as the sign
of good mental health but this may not be understood that the highest level of mental health has
been achieved. There is always need for making effort for lifting mental health to higher and
higher levels.

Measurement of Design
On the basis of the please testing and item, analysis 15 questions have been selected from the
universe of each component dimension. In this way, there are 105 questions in all. To control
motivational distortion effect, only such questions are chosen which are relatively neutral on the
criterion of value. Another plan to reduce distortion effect has also been applied, wherein,
instead of using direct terms expressing a concept, only the such items have been used which are
associated with the concept.
Questions have been presented in a mixed way. To make the scoring easy, they have been placed
in such a serial order that questions belonging to first dimensions are 1,8, 15, 22,29 ,36,43, 50,
57,64 ,71, 78 ,85, 92,99 serial order. In similar way, questions pertaining to remaining
dimensions are located at the interval of 7 places.
Each question entails 3 probable answers (yes, uncertain, no). There is separate answer sheet
apart from question booklet. Questions are so framed that appropriate answer of some one's bags
score 2, while uncertain answer is weighted by one. In this way scores obtained in this test
indicate adjustment. Testees are so high mal-adjustment while low scores express adjustment.
Testees are so instructed that as far as possible they have to encircle ‘yes’ or ‘no’.’ uncertain’
response has to be given rarely. In spite of such instruction if anyone encircles more ‘uncertain’
responses, then it exhibits his confusion of self-understanding or ambi-cursion decision making.

No time limit is prescribed for answering. Each testee has to be given sufficient time so that he
may answer each question. In answering questions, instead of thinking one has to express first
felt response, which occurs immediately in the mind. So test may be finished easily within 40 to
45 minutes. Many peoples are it within 30 minutes.

 Questions have been selected from research supported Eyserck and Wilson (1975) list to ensure
construct validity of the test. Therefore, it may confidentially be said that the test measures the
same concepts which it purports to measure.
To establish internal validity equations have been selected on the basis of their power of
discrimination.

Instruction for administration


Before starting administration, it is important to establish good rapport with the testee and to
make him clear that these results may be useful to him only when he answers questions without
hesitation or any reserve. The testee, who has come due to his own Accord of thinks that test
results will help in diagnosis, co-operate easily. Otherwise, it is necessary to make special
request for the cooperation.
To ensure reliability of testing instructions have been given in the test booklet. It is necessary to
introduce them before starting test work. For this, it will be proper that after filling details of
name, etc. on the answer sheet, the administrator gives one book 8-test booklet to the testee and
keep another with him. Before answering, administrator has to read instruction loudly while
testee or testees read them silently along with him. In the end, it has to be ascertained that the
testee has understood the process of answering. At this stage his doubts, if any, must be
eradicated and his questions must be answered. After this, he may be asked to start answering.
When the testee is answering, the administration should inspect that he is doing the work rightly.
If the testee asks any question during the process of answering, the administrator should answer
that question in such a way that no hint is provided for any particular answer.

Scoring
When testing is over, score for each dimension are determined. For this scoring key should be
placed over the answer sheet as instructed. Instructions are printed on the scoring key. Scores
failing in each column should be totaled and written in the lower end of the column. This total
score is the raw score of the related dimension. To make these scores statistically valid they are
converted into sten scores by the help of norms table. Mean of sten scores of the seven
dimensions indicates relative status of the adjustment or neuroticism of the individual tested.

Norms
Norms group includes local educated males and females of 17 to 60 years. Modal age of this
group is 24-25 Years. This is the beginning of adulthood which is most effective and important
time of one’s life. Comparison with mixed group of this duration is useful step. This norms
group contains 150 individuals.
Studies have generally revealed that age and sex differences exist in comprehensive dimension
of adjustment as well as in its components.

Test Administration
Test was conducted in open space where rapport was built up so that subject feels comfort.
After preparing necessary equipment’s and atmosphere the subject was given following
instructions:
Instructions:
1. There are several questions in this booklet.  In each question, you have to tell something
about you.  Be careful so that no question is left unanswered.
2. You have not to answer on this test booklet.  You have been given separate answer sheet for
this purpose.  Against all 105 questions, there are three responses alternatives in the cell
indicating-yes, uncertain and no response of the testee.  While answering a question if you
have to say ‘Yes’ then you cross(x) the cell below is response on the answer sheet.  If you
have to say ‘No’ then cross the cell below ‘No’ response.  If you are in doubt, you make
cross (x) the cell below and certain category.  Try your best to answer in ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ only.
3. Please do not put any mark on this test booklet.
4. To introduce the nature of items and the method of answering two examples are given here:
1.  Do you take rest easily while lying or sitting?
2.  If anyone criticizes you, do you become very nervous?
Look at the answer sheet.  One testee has expressed his answer to the first
question by crossing (x) the cell below ‘Yes’ alternative on the answer sheet. For
the second statement, he has encircled ‘No’.
5. In the process of answering questions, you have not to think.  As you study the item, you
have to express whatever   affective response comes to your mind first.
6. Secrecy will be meeting about your answers.  So express the truth about you without any
hesitation.  You have gained more things by giving fake answers.
7. Though there is no time limit for recording your responses, you are expected to respond
quickly.  Remember, you have not to devote much time for any item.
8. By answering is item one by one you have to proceed to the last.  Do not wait for any
instruction here after.  After responding to the last item, please, check that is item has been
responded.
After given proper instructions, the test was conducted, when the subject finished her task
she was requested for introspective report and released from with thanks.

“I found test is interesting and exciting the questions were very clear and easy since every
question had common options.”

Scoring & interpretation.


For the score, there is two options; ‘Yes ‘or ‘No” for the every criterion. If the answer is
yes, for the given criterion of the given question then score 2 is given and if the answer is
No for the given criterion of the same number then score 0 is given. For Uncertain answer,
score 1 is given. For Example, as per the criterion table, for Criterion Self Esteem, Question
no. 1,36,43,50,78,99 are given and if the answer is Yes under this question score 2 is given
and if the answer is No, no score is provided. Likewise, for question no.
8,15,22,29,57,64,71,85,92, if the answer is No, score 2 is given and if the answer is Yes, no
score is provided. If any answer is given as, uncertain Score 1 is given.
The raw score is added and total score is converted into sten score of each criterion is taken
from the manual booklet of sten score.

Interpretation
From the result of scoring, the following interpretation has been found out:
1. For Criterion 1 (Self- Inferiority vs. Self-Esteem), the raw score was 11 giving the Sten Score
of 6. It means the subject is in average position.
2. For Criterion 2 (Depression vs. Happiness), the raw score was 10 giving the Sten Score of
6.It means the subject is in average position.
3. For Criterion 3 (Anxiety vs. Calmness), the raw score was 10 giving the Sten Score of 5. It
means the person is more calmness than anxiety.
4. For Criterion 4 (Obsessiveness vs. Natural), the raw score was 18 giving the Sten Score of 6.
It means the subject is in average position.
5. For Criterion 5 (Dependence vs. Independence), the raw score was 12 giving the Sten Score
of 6. It means the subject is in average position.
6. For Criterion 6 (Hypochondrianess vs. Feeling of Being Healthy), the raw score was 8 giving
the Sten Score of 5. It means the person has more feeling of being healthy than
hypochondrianess.
7. For Criterion 6 (Guilt Feeling vs. Innocence), the raw score was 14 giving the Sten Score of
7. It means the person has more feeling of guilt than having feeling of innocence.

Impression
The subject has average results regarding the criterion I, II, III, IV, V and VI, which means
she does not need any consultation to counseling but she seemed to have little more guilt
feeling than the average position as per criterion VII.

Conclusion
The subject has normal reaction to her surrounding and has normal adjustment capacity. She just
has more guilt feeling than average condition.
