English Teaching Methodologies

Here are 3 screenshots of feedback I provided to classmates in the forum: [SCREENSHOT 1] Comment on Classmate 1: Great job answering all the reflective questions! I especially liked how you explained the difference between method and approach - breaking it down into theory vs practice is a clear way to understand the distinction. Your personal experiences with language learning were also insightful to read. Nice work participating in the discussion. [SCREENSHOT 2] Comment on Classmate 2: Thank you for sharing your thoughts on English teaching methodologies. I found it interesting that you prefer learning by doing activities. Giving students opportunities to practice using the language through games, songs, etc. is definitely an engaging way to learn.

UNIT 1 – PHASE 1 INITIAL ACTIVITY

TEACHER: LIZETH MORA

STUDENT: ANGELICA CASTELLANOS CAICEDO

GROUP: 6

BOGOTÁ
Step 1: Reflective questions
Answer the following questions:
1. What is the difference between method and approach?
2.Have you had bad experiences in your English learning process?
3.Do you consider that a teacher can use more than one English teaching method?
Why?
4.What do you know about English teaching methodologies? What’s your favorite
one?
5.What do you think should be the role of the teacher inside the classroom?
6.Why do materials used in the English classes play an important role in the
teaching process?
7.How do motivation is related to the English learning methodology applied by the
teacher in the classroom?
8.What are your expectations about this course?

Answers:
1. Approach is the skills of a learning process of an specific subject, while
method is the level at which theory is put into practice, at which decisions
are made about the specific skills that are taught, the content that is taught.

2. Yes, sometimes is hard to get a good teacher who likes what is teaching, so
for many students (like me) is hard to see something positive during the
learning process because it turns a little bit harder to learn.
In this case is when the student has to improve without depending of
someone else.

3. Yes, its important as teacher to learn how to teach with different

methodologies based on the topic that is going to teach according to the
skills of each one of the students, in this way the class is not going to turn
boring or not interesting for some students.
4. I know many teaching methodologies, but what I like the most is the
“Learning by doing”, where the students can practice and learn at the same
time, and also, I think is a fun way to learn each other doing different
activities where they can talk, play, write and also sing in English.

5. As a teacher is important to know that we are the people who can give the
tools to the students, in this way both as a teacher and student can build a
building of knowledge.

6. Because not everyone learn in the same way, while “pepita” learn really
easily listening to music, “pepito” can´t understand the song so he need the
lyrics of the song to read it and understand it.
So is important to manage different materials to teach, where the students
can feel comfortable and identify by those tools, like: books, videos, songs,
guides, games, reedings, etc.

7. As I already said in the “6” point, is important to manage different materials

and also methodologies because not everyone learn in the same way, so
the teacher can use those tools to motivate the class and also help to learn
a second language in a fun way.

8. Well as the name of the course says “Methodology in foreign language

teaching”, I supposed that I´m going to learn about methodologies in my
learning process to be better teacher that I am.
