Introduction 2a

The direct shear test determines the shear strength of soil by measuring the maximum resistance when subjected to shearing under different normal loads. The test is commonly used to evaluate shear strength parameters like internal friction angle and cohesion for applications involving soil shearing like landslide remediation and foundation design.

Introduction:-
The Direct Shear Test is an experimental procedure conducted in geotechnical engineering
practice and research that aims to determine the shear strength of soil materials. Shear
strength is defined as the maximum resistance that a material can withstand when subjected to
shearing. Generally, the Direct Shear Test is considered one of the most common and simple
tests to derive the strength of a soil and can be performed on undistuRbed or remoulded
samples.

In soil mechanics, the shear strength is evaluated using the Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) Failure
Criterion. The M-C Criterion assumes that the shear strength depends on three factors:
1.The normal effective stress (σn)
2.The friction angle of the material (φ)
3.The cohesion of the material (c)

The test is commonly employed for geotechnical projects where soil shearing along a horizontal
plane is anticipated. This applies to landslide remediation, slope stabilization, and pipeline
analysis projects.

In many engineering problems such as design of foundation, retaining walls, slab bridges,

pipes, sheet pilling.the value of the angle of internal friction and cohesion of the soil involved
are required for the design.Direct shear test is used to predict these parameters quickly.

The test is carried out on either undisturbed samples or remoulded samples. To facilitate the
remoulding purpose, a soil sample may be compacted at optimum moisture content in a
compaction mould. Then specimen for the direct shear test could be obtained using the
correct cutter provided. Alternatively, sand sample can be placed in a dry state at a required
density, in the assembled shear box. A normal load is applied to the specimen and the
specimen is sheared across the pre-determined horizontal plane between the two halves of the
shear box. Measurements of shear load, shear displacement and normal displacement are
recorded. The test is repeated foe two or more identical specimens under different normal
loads. From the results, the shear strength parameters can be determined.
