Bio Lab 1

The document details a study that used quadrats to determine the species density of grass by counting the number of grass species in squares within the quadrats thrown in random areas and calculating species frequency and density. The study involved throwing quadrats three times and counting the grass species in each square to calculate species frequency as the number of occupied squares over total squares, and species density as the total number of organisms over number of throws.

Title: Ecology

Aim; To determine the species density of a grass

Material:

Wood
String
glue/nails

Method:

● A 1x1 meter quadrat was made and was divided into 9 equal section
● The quadrats thrown 3 times in random area
● The number of grass species were counted in each of the 9 squares
● Use the total to calculate the species frequency and species density.
Species frequency= no. of occupied square/no.of total squares * 100
Species density= toal no. of organism/no. Of throws

Calculation

SF= Number of square occupied

Number of total squares

First throw

SF = Number of square occupied

Number of total squares

=6 x 100 = 66.66

Second Throw

SF = Number of square occupied

Number of total squares

= 4 x100 = 44.44
10

Third throw

SF = Number of square occupied

Number of total squares

= 7 x100 = 77.77

SD = Total number of organism

Number of throws

1st thow 32 = 10.66

2nd throw 23 = 7.66

3rd throw 20 = 6.66

Discussion

A quadrat is most suitable for these investigation because it allow researches to study plant and
animal is a spread out population. The quadrat marks off an exact area so that the plants in the
area and be identified and counted. The reasons for distribution of species is became of climatic
factors, soil pH

Conclusion

In conclusion the density of grass species was determined
