Title: Ecological study
Aim: To determine the species distribution and species density of various plants in St. Francois Girls
College using the random Quadrat method
Introduction:
Describe the effect relevant physical factors will have on the distribution of plant species in SFGC. What
is an ecological study? Explain the benefits of using an ecological study. Describe what methods were
used to determine various species (classification according to physical features of plant i.e. shape, size,
venation, leaf margin pattern). Explain why the above sampling method was used
Apparatus:
Method:
1. Throw the quadrat randomly in the savanna
2. Identify all plant species found in quadrat
3. Count the number of each species in quadrat
4. Repeat steps 1-3 ten times.
5. Record all observation in table format.
Results:
Table Title:

Show sample calculations and formulae used for those marked*
(Species density=dividing the total number of individuals of the species by the number of quadrats used).
(Species frequency=this is the percentage of quadrats in which the given species was found)
Discussion:
Explain what type of information can be obtained by calculating the species frequency and species
density of organisms in this study.
Based on results explain possible reasons for the most/ least dense and most / least frequent species of
plant life.
Conclusion:
