MISTAKE CORRECTION
WHY I DISLIKE COMPUTERS
Most everyone says that computers are wonderful and which they are changing our lives for a better
by making everything faster and more reliable, but I am not so sure that this is the case.
The other day I was standing in a large department store waited to pay for a couple of films of my
camera when the assistant announced that the computer which controlling the till had stopped working. I
didn't think this was a big problem and I set off to finding another counter, but of course, all the machines
are part of the same system. For there we were: a shop filled of customers, money at the ready, waiting to
make our purchases, but it was quite clear that nothing of the assistants knew what to do. They weren't
allowed to take our money and give some customers a written reception, because the sales wouldn't then
have been recorded in the computer system.
In the end, as many other people, I left my shopping on the counter and walking out. Don't you think
that ridiculous? It would ever have happened before computers, and that, for myself, is the problem: we are
beginning to depend on these machines so complete that we simply can't manage without it any more.

READING COMPREHENSION
Surprisingly, the first newspaper was invented by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. As far back as
59BC, he invented the first earliest known official news in Rome, Italy. His newspaper, called the Daily
News, was written entirely by hand and posted on the walls of public buildings.
The newspaper’s contents were much the same as those found in any modern newspapers. The
news ranged from accounts of wars and political events, to a social diary announcing coming attractions
and festivals. There was also a section dealing with the latest births, deaths and marriages. Readers could

who lived a long way from the major cities used to pay people to travel to the city, copy the news down on
paper and post it back to them in a letter. Some of these people used to make extra money by sending the
news to more than one client.
