RCA Copy Generator Rotor

1. Generator Unit 2 at a power plant tripped due to a rotor earth fault. 2. The root cause was determined to be carbon dust deposited on the rotor from the carbon brushes, which caused tracking and led to the unit tripping. 3. Recommendations to prevent recurrence include more frequent cleaning of the slip ring assembly with an air blower to remove dust buildup and configuring an alarm to alert personnel.

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS REPORT

IPP/QR-RCA/DEPT/S NO
Dept. EMD Equipment ROTOR SLIP RING Shift A-Shift

Equipment Code Stop Time Reported to EMD @ 12:45 Hrs.

Frequency Date of RCA 30.03.2019 Start Time 12:45 Hrs

Name of Fault / Breakdown (Please state the parts damaged , Location if any )

GENERATOR UNIT-2 TRIPPED ON ROTOR EARTH FAULT

Condition Prior to failure ( Please state the past performance , history )

UNIT WAS RUNNING AT FULL LOAD OF 600MW

Observations

1. ROTOR VALUE FOUND TO BE @ 2.7 KILO OHM AT THE TIME OF TRIPPING.

2. DURING COASTING DOWN PERIOD IT WAS OBSERVED THAT ROTOR EARTH LEAKAGE VALUE AT 332 KILO OHM.
3. OPENED ALL THE BRUSHES BUT THE VALUE WAS STILL CONSTANT.
4. DUST ACCUMULATION OF CARBON CAUSED TRACKING LEADING TO TRIP.

Causes of failure/ Root Cause:

Why Why Analysis ?

1 .Why Rotor Fault happened ?

Due to tracking caused by carbon dust.
2. Why Carbon powder deposited ?
Carbon powder derived from rubbing of carbon brushes should throw of by centrifugal force needs regular cleaning.
3. Why No alarm before tripping ?
This is incipient fault and started with tripping rather than alarm
4. Why alarm was not provided ?
Not in scheme
5. Why ?

Root Cause: Carbon dust deposited caused tracking leading to unit outage.

Action Taken

1. IR value of rotor ensured.

2. IR value of cable between JB & terminals Ensured.
3. Relay measuring value noted at 9.996 Mega Ohm after cleaning.

Recommendations to avoid recurrence

1. Frequent cleaning of slipring assembly with air blower will throw away dust.
2. Alarm configured to DCS will alarm desk personnel.
