5. Method Statement
5.1 Handling
All piles shall be stacked in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations,
The contractor shall ensure that operations involving loading, transporting,
offloading, handling, stacking and pitching the piles, are carried out in such a manner
as to prevent damage to the piles.
Figure below shows the proposed handling point.
0.2L 0.2L
Piles shall be placed near by the driving point by Service Crane, APPENDIX-6 shows
the the lay detail of loading test.
Any damage that does occur shall be drawn to the attention of the Owner and the
contractor shall submit his proposals for remedial works for approval prior to
commencement. The making good/replacement measures shall be carried out by
the contractor at his own expense. The Owner’s approval of the completed remedial
measures will be required before inclusion into the structure can take place.
Transportation of piles from factory to site, use trailer to remove
5.2 Marking of Piles
Each pile shall be clearly identified by its number in white paints at least every three
meters, with a minimum of three locations at the top, bottom and middle. The
length shall be marked and identified with paint at least every meter. Intervals of
500 mm shall also be marked with paint.
5.3 Setting Out
The main setting out of the piles is to be completed prior to commencement of
piling. Secondary or individual pile setting out is to be completed and agreed upon
not less than 8 hours prior to commencing work on the piles concerned. All main
setting out points (exact coordinates), lines, stations and other work are to be
maintained safe and undisturbed.
The pile driving points shall be set to the correct places according to the pile lay out
drawing with Owner’s confirmation.
5.4 Driving
Driving of permanent/used piles begins after the evaluation of the preliminary pile
load tests for compression load and lateral load has been completed.
The selection of the driving and extracting plant shall be made having due regard to
the ground conditions and pile type.
The Owner shall be notified of the contractor’s intention to pitch and drive piles at
least 24 hours prior to commencement of the installation works. Prior to interlocking
the piles the contractor shall ensure that the locks are undamaged clean and free
from deleterious materials.
Pitch and drive techniques shall be permitted if the following criteria are met:
The rig has sufficient height to adequately support the entire pile during driving.
The driving shall be relatively easy, without hard bands or obstructions which
would dictate the other requirement for full support.
The contractor can satisfy the Owner that the pile structure can be built to
conform with the specified tolerances for verticality and alignment.
The number of blows for the last 300 mm shall not be smaller than determined by
the pile load test and established by the Owner , and in addition, the number of
blows for last 1 cm shall not be smaller than 12. Piles shall be driven until the
required final set is achieved. If piles do not achieve the required final set at the
specified depth, piles shall be driven deeper until specification is met and upper
portion shall be extended by welding. Vibration and ground movement will be
monitored during piling by observing the cracking condition of buildings 100 m
radius around piling site. A proposal of monitoring method will be submitted to the
Owner for approval.
During the driving period, the vertically of the pile shall be periodically checked by
two vertical string with weight at the end point of each string hang on tripod placed
at right angles to the pile position.
The number of blows every 50 cm depth of penetration shall be recorded from the
driving started. Driving shall be continued as the design depth. In case pile’s design
capacity predicted not being able to be reached at the end of driving, driving shall be
stopped at the time when remaining pile’s length is 1 meter above ground. Then, the
next segment of pile will be joined to the previous one by welding.
Hilley Formula might be used as a reference for calculation of pile capacity.

5.5 Driving Tolerance
The following tolerances are suitable for general site practice for permanent
structures. However more lenient limits may be applied if difficult driving conditions
are encountered e.g. obstructions or the works are only temporary:
Deviation perpendicular to theoretical line not exceeds 75mm.
Deviation of verticality normal to and along the line of the piles, 1 in 100.
Deviation of batter piles shall not deviate by more than 2 in 100 from specified
batter.
Top of finished pile level +/- 20mm.
Deviation from these tolerances will not be acceptable without written agreement
from the Owner. Forcible correction will not be permitted.
The above tolerances are included for guidance purposes only and should be altered
depending on site specific requirements.
If piles are installed out of plan position or line beyond allowable tolerances, the
piles shall be extracted or additional piles shall be driven, as requested by the
Owner, to properly provide for load conditions and to avoid overstressing of piles.
5.6 Cutting and Welding
On completion of the driving of the piles to the level approved by the Owner, the
heads of all piles shall be cut off to the level indicated only after there is no danger
from upheaval. All cut-offs shall become property of the Contractor and shall be
removed from the project site.
If required, jointing between joint plate on the edge of piles by welding using
electrode as required.
No cutting or welding of piles shall be carried out without prior written approval
from the Owner. All such cutting shall be carried out by approved method. The
remaining pile shall be of clean and even appearance with grinding tools being
employed to remove splatter. Cut offs shall be marked so that it is clear from which
pile they came and after agreement from the Owner will be disposed of in the pre
agreed manner. Cut offs of pile can carried out with 2 alternate method. The first
alternate is with use cutter machine, and the second is manual with man power.
Cutting must be carried out in such a way as to prevent damage or distortion to
adjacent piles. The finished level of the cut pile shall be within 20mm of the
theoretical level.
5.7 Extraction of Piles
When extraction of the piles is required, it shall be carried out using efficient
extraction equipment of adequate capacity. The extraction equipment shall be
correctly positioned over the pile to minimize damage to the pile head and to
prevent any major disturbance of the supporting ground.
5.8 Construction Method
Construction Method shown in APPENDIX-12.
6. Abandonment of Pile
Damaged pile shall be abandoned, replaced or repaired as approved by the and shall be
filled with soil. Additional piles shall be driven as requested to avoid overstressing of
piles.
7. Recording Forms
The contractor shall keep complete and accurate piling records. Two signed copies of
these records shall be submitted to the Owner not more than 48 hours from the date of
the works detailed therein. The pile records shall always be submitted with sufficient
time for the Owner’s approval prior to the piles becoming inaccessible due to further
operations.
The records shall contain the following information:
Type of pile
Pile number and all principal characteristics of the pile including dimensions,
Details of driving and installation sequence progress, including dates, times,
equipment used and personnel (operator, owner, etc)
