This document contains a school-based assessment project on whether boys weigh more than girls in teenage years. It includes an introduction outlining the purpose of the project, a method section describing a student survey, and outlines for sections on presenting and analyzing the data. The project will compare weight data collected from male and female grade 10 students and draw conclusions on whether boys or girls weigh more on average during teenage years.

Introduction

It has long been a question as to “who weighs more in their teenage years”. The researcher
intends to survey the students of grade 10 to be able to give an accurate answer to the question.
Method of data collection

Survey:

To gather information for this project, the researcher used a survey method. A survey can be
defined as; to take a general or comprehensive view of or appraise, as a situation, area of study.
A survey has a variety of purposes and can be carried in many ways depending on the objectives
to be achieved. To collect data, the researcher surveyed the grade 10 students of Zeeburg
Secondary School to determine whether boys weigh more than girls in their teenage years.

The data collected was placed under tables and then combined for the final results.

Presentation of data

The histogram is a column graph with no spaces between each column, since the data is
continuous. It is used to represent a frequency Distribution where the weight of the column
rectangles represent the frequencies of each class or class mid-point, provided the width of the
class intervals are the same.

In order to construct the histogram, the researcher needed to find the upper and lower class
boundaries of each class height. By adding the upper limit of one class to the lower limit of the
next class and dividing by 2 the class boundaries can be found.

Width of class interval= upper class boundary – lower class boundary

The mode is the class with the highest frequency. The medium is 50% of the distribution. The
mean height for form 4 can be found using the following formulae:

Discussion of findings

From the calculations done above the researcher was able to determine that the mean weight for

Conclusion

This project was used to determine the solution to the main problem which was to satisfy the
desire to know what the mean weight of the researcher’s class was, and to find the modal and
median class intervals. Some of the advantages of using the histogram are; it can be used to
determine statistical information such as the mean value, the mode or highest block and the
minimum class interval value. Also, it is a comprehensive way of visualizing the distribution of
the data. However there are limitations to the histogram such as simplifying the data into a single
scale. In addition, the histogram s based on two sets of data, but some types of data are very
complex and contains multiple data sets, therefore the analysis of two sets only may not be
enough to make informed decisions.
