Linear Function

A linear function is of the form y=mx+b, where m is the slope (rate of change of y with respect to x) and b is the y-intercept. The slope is constant for a linear function. You can find the slope using two points on the line as m=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1). The point-slope form is y-y0=m(x-x0) where (x0,y0) is a point on the line. You can use the point-slope form to find the equation of a line given a point and the slope. For example, if bacteria are decreasing at a constant rate of -10 bacteria/second and there

Linear function

A function of the form :y = mx + b where m is the slope

(rate of change of y with respect to x) and b is the y-
intercept , the value of y when x = 0.

In a linear function, the rate of change of the dependent

variable with respect to the independent variable is
constant.

For a linear function passing through points (x1,y1) and

(x2, y2):

y 2 − y1
m= x2− x1

Say the functions passes through (-2,5) and (3,-1).

y −y 2 − 1−5
1
m = x − x = 3−(− 2) = -6/5
2 1

How do we interpret the slope?

m = -6/5 what does it mean?
Ans:if the value of y is decreased by 6 the value
increased by 5.
(-2,5), (3, -1), ( 8 ,-7)
y −y2 1−7 − 5
m = x − x = 8 −(− 2) = -12/10 = -6/5
2 1

m = 2 = 2/1 = -2/-1
Interpret: if the value of y is increased by 2, the value of
x increased by 1.
If the value of y is decreased y 2 the value of x
is decreased by 1.
Point-slope form: y - y0 = m(x - x0) where m is the slope
and the function passes through (x0,y0).

m =-6/5 (-2,5) and (3,-1)

X0 = -2
Y0 = 5
y - y0 = m(x-xo)
Y-5 = -6/5(x-(-2))
Y-5 = -6/5(x+2)
Y = -6/5 x -12/5 + 5

Y = -6/5x -13/5

Find the equation of the line that passes through (3,-2)

and (1,6).
m= -4

y - y0 = m(x - x0)

Y-(-2) = -4(x-3)
Y+2 = -4x +12
Y = -4x + 12 - 2
Y = -4x + 10
===
Y-6 = -4(x -1)
Y = -4x + 4 + 6
Y = -4x + 10
Since the beginning the number of bacteria is
decreasing at a constant rate of -10 bacteria per second
(-10bacteria/s). After 2s the number of bacteria was
9980.

How many bacteria were there at the beginning? How

many bacteria will there be after 3.8s? How much time
is needed to reduce the number of bacteria to 4500?

Let: y = # of bacteria =f(x)

t = time (s)
Given: m=-10 (2,9980)

y - y0 = m(t - t0)

Y - 9980 = -10(t -2)

Y = -10t +20 + 9980
Y = -10t + 10000
How many bacteria were there at the beginning (x
(time) = 0)?
There were 10,000 bacteria.
How many bacteria will there be after 3.8s?
y = -10 (3.8) + 10000= 9 962
How much time is needed to reduce the number of
bacteria to 4500?
Y = -10t + 10000
y − 10000
t = − 10 = 550s
y − 10000 4500 bacteria −10000 bacteria −5500 bacteria
t= − 10 = − 10 bacteria/s = −10 bacteria/ s =
550s
A person’s tibia bone goes from ankle to knee. A male
with a tibia of 40cm will have a height of 177cm, while a
tibia of 43 cm corresponds to a height of 185cm.
Suppose the height and the length of the tibia are
linearly related (y= height; x = tibia).

(40,177) (43, 185)

m = 8/3

Y - y0 = m(x -x0)

y - 177 = 8/3(x -40)

8 320
y = 3x - 3 + 177
8 1
y = 3 x + 70 3

A) Write the linear function.

8 1
Y = 3 x + 70 3
B) How tall is a person whose tibia is 65cm?
2
243 3 cm is his height.
C) If a person has a height of 200cm, how long is his
tibia?
Given: y = 200cm
8 1
Y = 3 x + 70 3
1 8
Y - 70 3 = 3 x

y − 70
