Alaba, Sigmund Adrian Grade 9 - Newton Mathematics: Module 8

The document contains examples of using the Pythagorean theorem to solve for missing sides of right triangles. It also includes a word problem asking for the distance Romeo and Roger must travel to return to their starting point after running 8 miles north and 5 miles west. At the end, the student reflects on things learned about the Pythagorean theorem and similarity theorems, as well as one area of confusion around word problems applying the Pythagorean theorem.

Name: ALABA, SIGMUND ADRIAN

Year & Section: Grade 9 - Newton
Subject & Module No: Mathematics: Module 8

Week 8: Similarity Theorem

ACTIVITY 3. WHAT’S MY SIDE?

a 2 + b 2= c 2 c 2 = 20
22 + 4 2 = c 2 √ c 2 = 20
4 +16 = c 2 √ c 2 = √ 20
20= c 2 C = 4.47

a 2 + b 2= c 2 c 2 = 106
5 2 + 92 = c 2 √ c 2 = 106
25 +81 = c 2 √ c 2 = √ 106
106= c 2 C = 10.29
2

a 2 + b 2= c 2 a 2 = 39.55
a 2 + 3.92= 7.4 2 √ a2 = √ 39.55
a 2 +15.21 = 54.76 a = 6.29
a 2 + 15.21-15.21 =54.76-15.27
a 2 = 39.55

a 2 + b 2= c 2 a 2 = 108.04
a 2 + 3.62= 112 √ a2 = √ 108.04
a 2 +12.96 = 121 a = 10.39
a 2 + 12.96-12.96 =121-12.96
a 2 = 108.04

ACTIVITY 4. LET’S RUN!

Word Problem: Romeo and Roger run 8 miles north and then 5 miles west. What distance must they
travel to return to their starting point?

Solution:

a 2 + b 2= c 2
82 + 52= x 2
64 + 25= x 2
89 = x 2
x 2 = 89
√ x 2 = 89
√ x 2 = √ 89
x = 9.4 miles

REFLECTION:

3 things I found out

 Pythagorean Theorem is named after Pythagoras, a Greek philosopher and mathematician who
lived approximately 500 years before Christ.
 Similarity Theorems states that a line segment splits two sides of a triangle into proportional
segments if and only if the segment is parallel to the triangle’s third side.
 Two triangles are similar if the corresponding sides of two triangles are in proportion.

2 interesting things I learned

 In two triangles, if two pairs of corresponding angles are congruent, then the triangles are similar.
 The Pythagorean Theorem describes the relation between a right triangle's three sides

1 thing that confused me:

 Applications (word problems) with the Pythagorean theorem
