7.06 Bring On the Reform!
Now you should be familiar with key individuals in reforms of the 1800s. Your assignment is to create a blog post to
teach others about one of the reform movements. A blog is a short, informative post made on an Internet site. Blogs
contain catchy titles to lure in readers and can include videos and images.
There are two steps to this assignment.
Step One: Pick one of the reform issues:
o Children in poverty
o Education
o Deaf and Blind
o Mental Illness
o Temperance
Step Two: Write your blog (you will not be posting it on the Internet, just put it below)
In complete sentences of your own words, create a blog post that teaches society about the reform movement
you chose. The blog post should be at least one paragraph and should include the following:
• • A catchy title
• • What was the problem?
• • Who was involved in addressing the problem?
• • What was done to reform society?
• • Does the problem still exist today?
• • One example of something (law, organization, institution, etc.) that exists today because of
the reform movement of the 1800s
• • One image representing the reform movement and its goals
Title: You are able to teach me even though I can't see or hear you
The World Health Organization estimates 285 million people as visually impaired
around the world, including 39 million who are blind and 246 who have low
vision. Most visually impaired people in the world are living in low-income
settings. Blindness affects 82% of people aged 50 or older. Visual impairments
change the way children acquire information about the world around them.
Therefore, blind or visually impaired children must also learn specialized skills in
addition to regular classroom studies. The awl his father gave him accidentally
turned into a sword that blinded Louis Braille. Helen Adams Keller was an
American author, activist and lecturer who became an inventor and designer of
braille writing. Her graduation was the first by a deaf/blind person. The first time
she read letters was when she was 19. She was not born blind or deaf. Blind
people from around the world benefited from this concept, which is still used
today. This Notice of Policy Guidance (notice) applies the ADA Part B of the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, as amended by the 1997
amendments, to the education of blind and visually impaired students in the
common curriculum used in schools today. In the years following his
undergraduate studies, Keller became a famous author and speaker. Among
many other causes, she is remembered for advocating for people with
disabilities.
