14. 𝑥 4 + 𝑥 3 − 𝑥 − 1 = 𝑥 3 (𝑥 + 1) − 1(𝑥 + 1)
= (𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 3 − 1) = (𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 1)
OR 𝑥4 + 𝑥3 − 𝑥 − 1 OR 𝑥4 + 𝑥3 − 𝑥 − 1
= 𝑥4 − 𝑥 + 𝑥3 − 1 = 𝑥4 − 1 + 𝑥3 − 𝑥
= 𝑥(𝑥 3 − 1) + 1(𝑥 3 − 1) = (𝑥 2 + 1)(𝑥 2 − 1) + 𝑥(𝑥 2 − 1)
= (𝑥 3 − 1)(𝑥 + 1) = (𝑥 2 − 1)(𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 1)
= (𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 + 1) = (𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 1)(𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 1)
∴ 𝑥 + 1, 𝑥 − 1 and 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 1 are factors of 𝑥 4 + 𝑥 3 − 𝑥 − 1.
∴ The answer is C.

15. Expand and simplify each option:

A. (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 1) = 𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 3𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 3 = 𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 3
B. (𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 1) = 𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 3𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 3 = 𝑥 3 − 2𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 3
C. (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 1) = 𝑥 3 − 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 3𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 3 = 𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 3
∴ The answer is C.

16.
