Case Study 3:
Victoria Bus Line
SYNOPSIS/SUMMARY:
The former Manager of the Maintenance Department, Engineer Ryan Inductivo, requested an
approval of his retirement application as his age is reasonable to stop working in that kind of job. However,
before he sent his application, he received a note from the VP for Operations asking him to solve
immediately the existing problem in the company. Engineer Inductivo could not provide immediate
solution and sent a request for retirement the next day. Either way his reason for sending the request, his
application for retirement has been approved. Engineer Gerald Andalis who just passed the board
examination for Mechanical Engineering in the year 2013 has joined the Victoria bus Company at the same
year. After two years working in the company, he has been promoted from assistant manager to a
manager of the Maintenance Department. I assume that retirement of Engineer Inductivo made Engineer
Andalis got the promotion as the new manager of the Maintenance department. When Engineer Andalis
started the inspection of bus’s parts inside the storage room, he found out that there were
disproportionate of equipment stored. Considering by next month, the Victoria Bus Company will
accommodate 100 buses in the assigned routes for their company. Engineer Andalis will probably think of
another way on how to handle their respective department effectively. More equipment parts will be
purchase and checking it personally will avoid problems in purchasing products.
FINDINGS:
1. Engineer Andalis will probably inspect the number of materials purchased personally.
2. For him to be able to work effectively and efficiently, he must change the way of purchasing
products. It is best if they have a purchase system to avoid piled up orders and for clearer
records.
3. They should also consider adding of personnel to avoid delays of delivering the necessary
parts.
DISCUSSION:
Engineers were equipped and trained to provide effective solutions and help to prevent the future
problems that they will encounter. Implementing the acquired knowledge is a bit more challenging. From
Engineer Andalis case, I noticed that the problem happened because of lack managing skills of former
manager from the Maintenance Department. Also, lack of personnel could probably increase the chance
of having difficulties in processing their business. Since we have a growing industry and changes were
undeniably perpetual, the company must provide system that will make their job more efficiently. It may
help their company to not be left behind and be able to give more time to think on how to improve their
services. Engineer Andalis will have to make a better decision that will improve the current situation of the
company facing.
CONCLUSION:
Troubles or problems in the business are normal. They always there waiting to be call out but good
thing we have our specified leaders or personnel to handle this kind of scenario. In this case, I figured out
that effective leaders must be flexible and wise enough to provide solutions briskly. I suggest that they
provide a systematic program in purchasing products. It is time efficient and helps to avoid delays of
purchasing products since it is automatically recorded in the system. Engineer Andalis might change the
old way of purchasing products since it was way older and it is the right time to improve their services.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I suggest that Engineer Andalis will provide the systematic way of purchasing parts. It will save
their time to avoid piled up orders. It is a way more clearer kind of recording the purchase orders. Also to
avoid disproportionate of purchased parts, Engineer Andalis must personally check or assigned a personnel
to double check the necessary parts before they create a purchase orders.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Providing a systematic purchased order, Engineer Andalis could easily access the number of
orders. It is not time consuming since it is recorded by the system. To make sure that purchased parts were
only the necessary products, the additional mechanic and assistant should inspect carefully each buses.
