Unit 1 MORE ABOUT ANIMALS!
In this unit, students will learn about:
list the animals they see in their surroundings (land and water).
recognise that animals that live on land are different in features
from those that live in water.
recognise that all animals have young ones that grow into
adults.
name different animals and their young ones. For example,
horse and foal, cat and kitten, dog and puppy, hen and chick,
frogs and tadpoles, butterflies and caterpillars etc).
identify that some young animals do not look like their parents
(frogs and butterflies etc.)
list the animals that feed their young ones and look after them.
name different places where animals live (water, forests,
mountains, deserts etc.)
KEYWORDS:
breathe: take air through nose and mouth into the body
gills: the organ used to breathe by fish or other water animals
1
There are different kinds of animals on our Earth.
Animals are found in different places. Some animals live
on land. Some live in water, and some live both in water
and on land.
2
Unit 1 - MORE ABOUT ANIMALS!
LAND ANIMALS
On your way from school to home, you must have seen
some animals like dogs, cats, cows, etc. These animals
live on land. We keep some of these animals in our
homes as pets.
Animals that live on the land have body coverings
according to the weather they live in. Most land animals
have legs to move. They have lungs to breathe. Land
animals live in places like:
Forest (deer, leopard, fox, tiger, squirrel etc)
3
Desert (camel, scorpion etc)
Mountains (snow leopard,
markhor, mountain goat etc)

WATER ANIMALS
Many kinds of animals live in water. Animals like fish,
octopus, whale, shark and many others live in water.
Some fish live in rivers while some live in seawater.

swim in water. They breathe
oxygen from water. Most of these
animals have gills to breathe
and fins to swim. Whales and
dolphins do not have gills, they
breathe through their lungs.
Some water animals have scales
on their bodies.
LAND AND WATER ANIMALS
Some animals live both on land
and in water. For example frog,
crocodile, tortoise. Frogs lay eggs
underwater and live on land near
water when they grow up.

Unit 3 THE NATURAL
ENVIRONMENT
In this unit, students will learn about:
recognize that the natural environment comprises of living and
non-living things.
name some natural resources of land, water and air.
recognize the importance of natural resources.
list the ways in which people use natural resources
KEYWORDS:
Environment, land, water, air, natural resources
21
There are many things around us which affect our life.
All these things make up our environment. The air we
breathe, the land we walk on, the soil in which plants
grow, the plants and animals, water etc. all make up the
environment.
The environment is formed by living and non-living things.
Look at the picture below:
You can see some living things: human beings, animals,
plants. Some non-living things in this picture are land,
water, air, soil, rocks etc.,
22
Unit 3 - THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
Look around yourself, how many living and non-living things
can you identify?
NATURAL RESOURCES
Things which are found in nature and can be used by
people are called natural resources. Natural resources are
found all around us. Some of these resources come from
land, some from water and some from air.
air land
water
23
NATURAL RESOURCES FROM LAND
There are many things which we get from land. We use
land to build buildings, plant trees, grow crops and get
many more important things like coal, wood, rocks etc.
NATURAL RESOURCES FROM WATER
Without water life is very difficult on Earth. There are so
many things for which we need water. We need water for
drinking, cleaning, cooking, watering plants etc. Besides
water for our use we get many kinds of fish from the river
and seawater.
24
Unit 3 - THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
NATURAL RESOURCES FROM AIR
Air is a very important resource for
human beings, plants, animals and
other living things. We get oxygen
from air to breathe. Flowing air is
used to produce electricity.
25
IMPORTANCE OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Land, water, and air are non-living things but all of them
are equally important for living things. Everything around
us is either made of natural resources or with the help of
natural resources. For example consider a glass of water,
water is a natural resource but the glass is also made out
of natural resources. Without natural resources survival
on Earth would become difficult.
We should take care while using these resources. Do not
waste water, throw rubbish on land in water. Plant more
trees to keep the air clean.
