3. On any school day, Peter takes one of the three bus routes R 1 , R 2 and R 3 to school with
probabilities 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2 respectively. From past experience, the probabilities that
Peter is late for school when he takes routes R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 respectively.
(a) Given that Peter is late for school on a certain day, find the probability that he has
taken route R 3 .

4. In a random sample of 120 citizens, 32 of them agree with the arrangement of universal suffrage
proposed by the government. Let p be the proportion of the citizens who agree with the
government’s arrangement.
(a) Find an approximate 95% confidence interval for p.
(b) Someone claims that at least 95 citizens are required in the sample so that the width
of the 90% confidence interval for p is less than 0.15. Do you agree? Explain your
answer.

9. In a supermarket, the waiting time (in minutes) of a customer at the cashier follows a normal
distribution with mean and standard deviation . From a random sample of
