Cego System: Helping The Visually Challenged"

The document describes the CEGO system, which is a navigation device designed to help visually impaired people safely navigate indoor and outdoor environments. It uses ultrasonic sensors and microcontrollers to detect obstacles and provides feedback through buzzers or vibrations to alert the user and guide them. The system aims to give blind individuals greater independence and confidence by helping them avoid collisions with obstacles at different heights or levels. It consists of sensors placed on the head, hands, waist and shoes to provide full-body detection capabilities.

USEFUL EFFECTIVE
SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE
Echo sounding is a type of sonar used to determine the the distance by transmitting
sound waves. The time interval between emission and return of a pulse is recorded,
which is used to determine the depth of water along with the speed of sound in water
at the time.

The idea is based on the principle of echo. The ultrasonic sensor emits sonar
waves. When a objects comes in the way of the waves, the waves are reflected
by the object, the sonar sensor detects the reflected waves and depicts the
distance of the object and sends the response accordingly.
THE CEGO SYSTEM
Usually, the blind people use canes which are very limited in its ability to provide navigation assistance to
the user, it could not help them to detect dangers from all levels of obstacles. Therefore, the purpose of this
project is to build a wearable navigation system that will be able to guide a visually impaired person safely
and have the same ease and confidence as a sighted people in an indoor and outdoor environment.

The developed model consists in sensing the surrounding environment and provide real-time detecting via
ultrasonic sensors, and it aims to guide the blind person and prevent them from unwanted collisions with
the obstacles through buzzers and vibro-tactile feedback. The model consists of two systems head-hand and
shoe-waist unit. Both are integrated together, working as a single unit. Everything is controlled using
ARDUINO

We propose a solution to cover the whole body in the same time, as well we can detect head level obstacles,
high level obstacles (tables), stair-cases (upward stairs) and any other obstacles in front or on the sides of
the user within a range of half a meter and gives a suitable respect message empowering blind to move twice
his normal speed because she/he feels safe.
The system can also be linked also with a GPS-GSM module to pinpoint the location of the visually
challenged person and send it to a specific number whenever he feels lost. All of these measures altogether
also alleviate the risk of injury to the blind person.
PROBLEMS FACED BY THE BLIND
❖ The unsighted lack independence since at times they have to depend on people
to cross roads, be safe from obstacles, staircase.

❖ Usually a stick is used by the blind but it does not help in every condition or
help to indicate certain things and obstacles.

❖ They are on a high risk on getting lost while travelling.

❖ They can be severely injured since they crash into walls and trains.
SOLUTION- Cego System
❖ Using the cego system, a blind persons can navigate themselves through
obstacles, staircases and be safe from crashing into walls and
impediments, giving them a sense of independence

❖ In the place of a cane, a blind person can be navigated using sonar or

ultrasonic sensors which can indicate the person through different types
of feedback ensuring 360° observation.

❖ A GSM module AKA gps system can be used to determine the person’s
location avoiding
astraying from the path.

❖ The sensors can determine the obstacles thus guiding the person through
obstacles and avoiding injuries.
STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING
❖ Structure:
● The cego system currently consists of 6 ultrasonic sensors, 2 arduinos, 2 dc vibration motors,
buzzers, motor driver, 12v power supply and jumper wires.
● The cost price of the project is $15.

❖ functioning:
● The ultrasonic sensors, buzzers are connected to the microcontroller ‘ARDUINO UNO R3’.
● The DC vibration motors are connected to the motor diver ‘L289n’ which is connected to the
arduino respectively.
● The sensors detect obstacles at an average distance of 40 cm which is flexible.
● The obstacles detected by the hand sensors are detected by a vibro-tactile feedback.
● The obstacles detected by the head sensor are detected by a buzzer.
● The obstacles detected by the waist and leg sensors are by 12v buzzer (EXCEL-B20)
● Thus, the obstacles identified by different sensors are distinguished distinctly by different
feedbacks.
One of the project innovative ideas was its creativity through the simplicity of design and the aesthetic
features of the shoes,
the waist- hand band and the hat which the user can wear comfortably and help covering the whole body.
Another creative feature was the system alerting feedback represented by 2 types of alerts: high
frequency buzzers and vibration assistance for those who have less hearing capacity
