concepts and What is menstruation?
practicing new skills # What are the body parts involved in it?
2 Menstruation comes from the Latin word “mensis” (menses) which means
month. It is because it takes place about every four weeks or one month.
Menstruation is referred to as a woman’s monthly bleeding. When a lady
menstruates, there’s shedding in the lining of her uterus. Menstrual blood flows
from the uterus through the small opening in the cervix and passes out of the body
through the vagina. The blood does not clot because of the presence of a protein
called “plasmin” in the tissue. Menstrual blood is made up of tissues. Most
menstrual periods last from three to five days.
Menstruation is the first sign of puberty for girls. Girls’ first menstrual flow is
called menarche. This signals that she is growing up and ready for reproduction.
Menstruation is a part of the menstrual cycle – the process that prepares a
woman for pregnancy.
Menstruation starts during puberty and stops permanently at menopausal
period. It is also known as “monthly bleeding”, “a period”, and “a menses”. Menses
is a short word for menstruation.
The menstrual cycle is occurring monthly. It usually begins at the age of 10
or 13 and continues until they reach their forties or fifties. The parts of the
reproductive system involved in the menstrual cycle are the ovaries, fallopian tubes,
endometrium or uterine wall, cervix and the vagina. On average, it takes 28 days to
complete one menstrual cycle. For others, the cycle may range from 22 to 36 days.
The menstrual cycle is a series of changes in the endometrium (lining) of the
uterus.
The menstrual cycle provides important chemicals called hormones. It rises and
falls during the month because it is in control of the cycle. Estrogen is the female
hormone that rises in the first half of the cycle. If the egg is not fertilized, the
thickening in the uterus breaks down, then the menstrual cycle repeats again and
again and again.
Menstrual cycle eventually stops when there are no more eggs to be released.
This stage is called menopause which takes place between 45-55 years of age.
